Nokia 6300 has weaker signal than 6230i. Could this be right?

I have just got a new contract with orange and it comes with the 6300. I have put a payg orange sim card in it to test it out and it gives me a weaker signal than my 6230i.
Could this really be so? Could it be the sim? I have heard that the 6300 is supposed to be good but if the signal is weaker its not a lot of good especially as I find quite a few places with poor reception on orange.

  • mmmmm, the signal may not be weaker. It may just be the signal strength meters on the phones may not be calibrated the same. IF you are just going by a visual look at how many bars you have signal wise this may not be conclusive.

My 6300 does not work in a lot of places that my old 6230i used to (both on Orange) But I also have a works 6230i on Vodaphone that seems to work everywhere I go. Maybe the 6230i is just a better phone.

No I am not going just by the visual although that is more conclusive than just say one bars difference. The main part is where it actually comes up with "no network coverage"
  • Spoken to Orange and they suggest swapping the sim cards over. So I will try that and look for the weaker signal areas.
In the meantime anyone else experience similar?

How can swapping SIM cards possibly affect the received signal level? Sounds like it is simply an inferior handset - some are much better than others!

  • SIM card stuff sounds like a load of rubbish. No reason why a newer phone can't be worse performing than an older one anyway - in the race to cram more into handsets and push the price down something has to give somewhere.

I've found that to be the case between some old SE handsets I've owned and later models.

  • Trouble is that I have heard such good reports about the 6300 that I did not expect this.
