Will virgin handle the whole switch for me or do I have to cancel sky?

Sky uses the standard phone line network run by BT (openreach) and Virgin has got a completelly different network, their own optical cable network.
The system where the new supplier handles the transfer of service only works on the BT openreach network (likes of Sky, talktalk, plusnet, ee, vodafone, and so on. I am guessing if transfering to/from Virgin you have to deal with the disconnection yourself.
Be carefull with timings, because Openreach very often delay or mess about with service transfers from one operator to another. In my case it was 3/4 days that i would have been without service.0 -
There will be a cease charged raise by Openreach.
Virgin have their own network, they're totally unreleated so feel free to order Virgin and have it installed before cancelling Sky to ensure there's no downtime. If you're wanting to take your number then that won't be possible.
Virgin's network is fibre to the node and the coax copper cable to your home.0 -
so if I have a sky broadband account on the line - how will they change the line to a virgin line....will an engineer arrive to the house?! i'm never in 9 to 50

Do you have Virgin cables and phone socket in your house already ? If not you may have to pay0

As posted above, Virgin use a completely different infrastructure, and therefore 'line'. If you wanted to, you could have Sky and Virgin BB at the same time.
If your property has never had Virgin services before then you will have to arrange for someone over 18 to be there for the install.
Just to add, as you are planning to move in the next 6 months, getting tied into a new contract may not be the best idea. Especially with Virgin. If you move to an area that they don't supply you will have to pay up to end the contract0 -
ok thanks - cheers for noticing I will be moving.....I am hoping to just transfer the service...the £286 12 month fibre looks too good not to get from virgin0
-
Virgin only cover about half of the UK though. So there is a 1 in 2 chance that you will have to pay to terminate the contract if you can't get the services when you move. I suppose if comes down to how risk averse you are.0

I've seen plenty of reports that getting it ported back to the BT network can sometime be a problem.0 -
I think the point Lee was making is:
You can take your number with you, and have over lapping services.0
