Virgin Media placed a debt on my credit file

Last year after suffering lengthy issues with broadband service with virgin media I decided to just get rid of them as I explained to them that they had not fulfilled their part of the contract in providing me with a usable broadband service and I was not going to pay for something I was not receiving. They then proceeded to chase me for the remainder of the contract around £300 through debt recovery agencies, all of which I told the same thing as above that vm had not provided the service. I now find that after they had given up chasing me for it they placed my details on my credit file TWICE which of course is now affecting my credit score etc. What can I do?

    How exactly did you get rid of them? Did you just cancel the DD? It sounds like you cancelled the contract but VM did not.

    When you say the details are on your credit file twice. Do they both appear under VM or is one of them under the debt collection tion company?
  • Yes I just cancelled everything and sent their equipment back, both entries are VM...

    How did you cancel ?

    Secondly the credit dcore you speak of is only seen by you and only you. The credit history is what you should be focusing on.

    Sounds like you simply cancelled the contract because you were "not going to pay for something I was not receiving", unfortunately it doesn't work like that. You entered a contract and you decided to end it, VM are within their rights to charge you for the remainder of the contract, whether you used it or not. Unless the contract had a minimum level of service guarantee which I doubt, then they provided you with BB, irrespective of whether you thought it was usable or not.

    When I moved house a couple of years ago it was to an uncabled street so I had to pay the remainder of the contract up even though I wasn't using it. My decision to move to an uncabled street, my decision to cancel, so I paid up. Not really happy about it but I was in a contract. VM told me what I had to do in regarding cancelling (e.g. sending equipment back etc). People just don't read contracts they sign.

    OP what can you do? Well see what's happened to the debt. They may have stopped chasing you, but if the debt still exists it could be passed on to a debt collection company. Unless VM told you there was nothing more to pay when you cancelled and sen the equipment back then the defaults will stay.
  • Youre absolutely correct, I did indeed just cancel and I recognise that they hold all the cards but I was not going to be threatened into submission by them, they were not prepared to do anything to fix the issue which had gone on for nearly 6 months and call me old fashioned but I really do not beleive in paying for a service I'm not getting.

    Well you shot yourself in the foot with them actions.

    I know its in the past but what did you try to get the service you bought, did you complain ? Write to the ceo or the PA ? Sign up to the Virgin Media forums and post the issue on there ?

    Of course it will.

    Lenders are generally wary of people who take out credit and then don't pay it, especially if that's been recently.
