Heard this on the radio this morning.

Am expecting my brother to become one of these statistics, he can't cope or look after himself and has already lost his sleeping bag, fleece jacket, freedom pass, money (I actually think he was robbed for it).

He has no concept of timekeeping and so will miss all the soup kitchen and times that he is supposed to be somewhere to get some food from volunteers. Shelter and other charities also operate their emergency shelters for certain times and he won't be where he needs to be to get a bed for the night.

The weather is forecast to drop below zero later on this week. He won't survive it.

Is your fear of physical harm from him so great that you don't feel you can let him sleep in your house to avoid the bolded happening?

Yes he believes my parents are responsible for the way his life has turned out. He lashed out at my mum on Saturday for simply trying to zip his coat up.

Do you live with your parents too then? Sorry if I missed that earlier.

It is not fear of physical harm alone I suppose. It is a wish to not have a relative which is ill, asocial and dangerous to live with them until he either causes a major material or physical harm or till the end of his/their lives.
The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.

I wouldn't suggest it as a permanent solution, but the OP feels his brother's life is in serious danger if he is on the streets when the weather gets worse in a few days. They shouldn't risk their own safety of course, which is why I'm asking what I am.
  • I would not have someone with drug-related issues and a history of violent and abusive behaviour in my house, relative or not. Sorry.

Have you ever had to deal with such a situation? It's not as simple as offering a bed for the night. Unless you've ever been in that situation you cannot possibly comprehend.

There is a petition on Change.org on exactly this subject. I signed it, but I have no useful advice I am afraid.

Maybe you can find something useful here.
