Thing is, they already are (or were, in the case of the bank I worked for) trained to spot these scams. In many of the cases that have got to FOS, the customer was questioned but then repeated the reasoning they were given by the scammer as they 100% believed that the police were genuinely asking them to hand over cash and that the bank are in on it.

Sadly it does happen, and only today, I intercepted a transfer to a builder whom had told the customer he could clean and fix her guttering for a lovely price of £6000.00,

It was from a cold call on her doorstep and he was waiting for her outside of the branch, after having a conversation with her while assisting her with her transfer it was established that it was indeed a scam, and I stopped the transaction, and explained why, I thought it was best.

I spoke to her son, and he came to collect her from the branch, after a sit down and a cup of tea, and was no sign of the builder after she failed to return, (Im assuming he saw her being escorted into a room with a member of the team carrying a cup of tea)

Luckily on this occasion it was picked up, but there are times even when asked if they have been asked to do the transaction on behalf of a third party the customers still agree they are happy to do the transaction and they are given the money, as they are convinced that their money is not safe and to take it all out, normally with another person waiting outside or standing right next to the customer, pretending to be their relative, the lengths some people go to get other peoples money....

Training should be given at the beginning of employment to any customer facing staff...

I must say its becoming too common for my liking, along with charity chuggers, hanging outside and preying on older people and vulnerable customer who just sign up for everything because they were told too...

    Keep vigilant all.

  • Just a little update.
He has received a very small refund from Barclays as a good will gesture!

We've taken it to the Ombudsman now but I don't hold out much hope there but feel it is a process we must tick off.
