New bathroom quote

Hi,
So I'm planning on getting a new bathroom soon.
I'm planning on buying most of the materials myself and getting someone to do the work.
The best quote I have is £2600. Just wanted to check you guys think thats alright coz that plus the materials is more money than i was hoping to spend! I slowly came to realise how expensive it is to get a new bathroom! So im hoping you guys make me feel slightly better about spending so much!!
The bathroom is around 3m x 1.4m.
The quote for the work includes taking out the old bathroom suite, all the old tiles (floor to ceiling) and fake ceiling, building a new fake ceiling, fitting LED spotlights, fixing rotten floor boards, fitting new suite, doing all the tiling, changing radiator to heated towel rail and replacing the bathroom door.
What do you think? That it's reasonable?
Thanks!

I think it's reasonable. 7 years ago we had a polish guy do a full bathroom refit for £900, but that didn't include anything other than sealant/screws etc. We arranged waste removal, grout, tiles, bathroom suite, flooring. No doors changed, no ceiling work other than a skim and paint, no lighting, no floorboard work. The room was only 1.8x1.8m.

You'll get a much better deal if you don't insist on supplying the materials.

  • Doesn't sound too bad to me, there are a few risky bits like replacing floor boards and the ceiling which could throw some unknowns during the job depending on what the situation is once the old stuff is ripped out. You could always rip out the old tiles yourself to save a bit of money.

Don't suppose you're in Berkshire (could do with a bathroom refit on my property)?!

    Hi, no, I'm in Scotland..
Really? I thought it would be cheaper with me supplying the materials as then they don't put a mark up on it? Plus I get to choose from a large range, exactly what I want....

    It sounds fair to me.

The confusion with buying your own stuff is that there is a potential argument over who is responsible for what. If an item is faulty, it's your problem, not the people who fitted it. You'll end up paying the labour to repair.

You also won't buy materials at as good a price.

Well I'm currently re-doing our bathroom completetly of about the same size ( more or less everything you have in mind including the door change) + a custom wetroom instead of shower/bath + some more custom bits + completely new pipes everywhere+ one wall completetly re-built. So in actual work amount maybe 40% more than you have.

    - the sink/toilet/taps/radiator was top of the end stuff about £1400 worth ( got it all for £100 from ebay auction from some builder who had it removed from a new-build so was actually new but just fitted before).
-Floor some £90/sqm worth oak , got it for about £5/sqm from someone as those were his leftovers.
-Tiles about £22/sqm worth, got them for about £3/sqm - again ebay auction.
Everything else bought from shop, but of course sourced for good prices.

Will have it finished in a few days time ( Think I have spent about 8 full days so far on doing everything- but was mainly doing it in weekends when I had some time so it kinda stretched out)

have listed all my expenses, and when I will be finished I reckon I will have spent about £850 and about 11 full days to do it.

But that's of course for a person like me who has never done a bathroom before and had to learn few new things as he goes, for an experienced guy for that amount of work I reckon about 5-6days max.

A wet room with OAK..... says it all about the skills of a DIYer:rotfl:

Never done a wetroom that hasn't taken 10 days for 2 men....though mine won't leak like a sieve

Lol wut? You clearly haven't been out of your house much than :rotfl:
+If you make it half-arsed and using the cheapest nastiest products like 99% of the tradesman in UK do( just so they are able to do it faster and profit more) ,than yeah...maybe. :D I would never hire someone from this country to do any work for me just because of that and previous experiences when working along with others, got enough skills from my Carpenter days to do just about anything.
    good luck.

Andyhop is a bathroom guy. He's hot on attention to detail and proper preparation.

I'm also confused by a wet room with oak in it. How does that work?
