Alternatives to Google search

Options
I have always used Google as a search engine because the results they produce are good. I have tried Bing but I just dont get along with it so im looking for alternatives to try. I have used DuckDuckGo but not enough to have a real opinion on how good it is.

I sometimes feel the results from G. could be better and I could get more variety. It sometimes get boring seeing the same sources.

Are there any other search engines I should be trying (incl. persevering with DuckDuckGo)?

  • Give us an example where you don't get what you want.

What did you type - why was it no good?

Maybe it is about the search criteria entered or that you want specific types of returns.

There are other search engines, but unless you want specifics e.g. academic returns not much comes close often, let alone consistently (as you say)

With duckduckgo you will get genuine organic results, not swayed in any way by your previous visits to any sites or previous searches you have performed.

But i rather think that it is your search terms that you need to modify rather than your engine

    Yandex?

Thought I should mention them out of courtesy as they spend so much time trawling my website.:D
    Move along, nothing to see.

Anyone else noticed how many threads now start with 'So', 'Okay' or 'Basically'?
    That made me curious.
    https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=ssl#q=threads+starting+with+anyone = 43M
    https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=ssl#q=threads+starting+with+basically = 8M
    https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=ssl#q=threads+starting+with+so = 6M
    https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=ssl#q=threads+starting+with+okay = 7M
So not that Google is right, but these folks appear to be more original than "anyone".

Google has gone downhill, it used to find all sorts of stuff from historic paper articles and obscure webpages.

Now its rubbish for finding archived stuff. Maybe something to do with "the right to be forgotten" issue from a while back?

Have they stopped searching for results older than a few years?

  • The positives about Startpage and DuckDuckGo is that they respect your privacy, unlike Google. The downside is most websites still consider Google the "go to", so it's probably going to yield more results and in a format you are used to.

Google thinks last year is too old.

    Try - https://archive.org/web/

The problem for me on Google is that you get different results on different devices and different results in different countries. Which ultimately means a lot of faffing about and never knowing if your really getting the best results..... Sure it's nice getting results that are actually from UK sources and in English, but sometimes the things you need aren't in the UK and you may need to translate down a German internet forum (example) to get what you need!!

Oh and it annoys me that even with safe search turned off, your results are still censored, which means anything that the social justice warriors or "far left" don't like, you won't see. Who cares? I do, I want the bloody truth, not censored, politically correct nonsense. It's the internet not the damn BBC........
