If only it were so simple, standing charges make it less obvious to compare prices.

I consider myself fortunate. I fixed for 2 years on my dual fuel in June last year and so I'm unaffected by Npower's latest announcement.

What I don't understand however, are the amount of customers across all providers who seem content to just stick on a standard tariff seemingly never making the effort to find a cheaper alternative, and then moan and whinge when the prices rise. Even worse, those customers with Npower who cannot ever be bothered to find out if there is a cheaper tariff with Npower themselves.

As for Npower as a provider, I've been with them for several years now and never had an issue with them, but that doesn't mean to say I won't run to another provider in the future once my current deal expires.

People lead busy lives and doing anything slightly complicated on a computer puts people off.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

With the utmost of respect, I lead a very busy life but I can always take 15 minutes out of my day once in a while to save some money. Also, it isn't complicated. All it takes is two meter readings, use the freephone number, and speak to a customer services rep and it's done in less than 10 minutes, no computer involved.

I'm not sorry to say, for many people, it's down to pure apathy on the part of customers to take some initiative and help themselves.

    10% average price rise ?

I looked at the new figures for me today and then went looking for a new supplier. compared to the one year fix that I am on until March, the cheapest available is a 35% increase and even then Npower are more than that.

There is absolutely no justification for this level of increase at all.

Until last night I thought it was people's inertia that was keeping them on standard rates. A friend was on a standard rate and was totally convinced he was on a good deal. It wasn't until we compared rates and mine would have cost him over 25% less that it finally dawned that standard does not mean normal / usual but actually specially expensive. So I just wonder how many more people think like that.

As was said on tonight's ITV news, a large part of the increase is due to Smart roll out. The government is supposedly going to look into these increases, but you bet that when told the main culprit is the precious Smart system , they will back down.
  • I concur with earlier comments with regards to smart meters. I do object to the way they are presented as fitted at no cos or words to that effect. The fact is consumers ARE footing the cost of these for no tangible benefit. Sure it might allow the odd imbecile waste a bit less money but anyone sensible can keep track of their bills/usage fairly easily by simply reading their meter.

Do we have any idea what the assumptions underpinning the smart metering project are based on? I know some earlier green targets made some pretty heroic assumptions about changing consumer behaviour and relied on people pretty much buying new appliances.

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

I can fix for 13 months with Scottish Power for £1,787 , till March 2018 (v3)

or fix for 23 months with Scottish Power Help Beat Cancer Fixed Price Energy January 2019 v2 Online £1,892

NPower Super Fix March 2021 £2,363 that's fixing for 49 months!

    NPower Standard £2,491 !!!

The NPower standard tariff is more expensive than their own FOUR YEAR FIX!

In comparison, the E.On standard tariff Energy Plan is only £2,192.

The NPower standard tariff is totally out of order!
