How long do credit card companies keep records for?

Hello people!

I recently did an eligibility check that came back at 95% likely to be offered a barclaycard. Unfortunately I was declined, which I get, as 5 in 100 with my circumstances will get declined, however; I was declined not because of my credit score, but because I have had a barclaycard in the past (13 years ago) in which I broke the terms and conditions i.e I defaulted.

This lead me to wonder, as the above has fallen off my credit file now and my score (I know it is only a guide) has more than doubled, how long would companies keep records for and would I expect to never be offered a barclaycard again?

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply (if you do).

You cant be rejected because of your score as only you can see it.

Credit card companies can keep records for as long as they like, each 1 will keep them for varying periods of time.
  • Apparently Barclaycard have records going back to the last century perhaps:https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5593161
  • Thanks guys, looks like I'll give them a miss. Might dig out my old statements to see if I had PPI

I think as a general rule of thumb, defaults expire after 6 years. But that being said, if you got a black mark on your Barclays file, that could well be for an indefinite period of time. Perhaps it is best seeing which other banks might offer you a credit card, or maybe a credit building card?
  • I had a similar experience myself applied for a barclaycard was declined due to me previously breaking their terms however in December I was accepted only for £1200 though. So they can be forgiving:j

Doesn't the Data Protection Act prohibit companies from keeping data for extended periods?

Nope, it prevents them from keeping them longer than necessary. Business record of previous performance with credit products seems like something fair to keep as long as the person is alive to prevent future incidents and protect the business.

legally and for tax purposes etc they have to keep records for 6 years, they can of course keep an internal record for however long they want, and they should, to stop people doing exactly what you have done.

"Longer than necessary" is sufficiently vague to make that part of the DPA rather useless. :(

What do you suppose I have done? I have read never defaulted on a debt. I am not the OP or the subject of this thread. I demand an apology!

PPI complaint can be offset against any money you didn't pay when you defaulted

Just to echo the above, a company can have a black list of bad customers if they want to, they're a commercial operation not a charity and if you burned them before they have no reason to give you another chance

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
