HELP, Construction Work

Me and My boyfriend went to Thailand on the 2nd of November 16. We had a rocky start due to delayed flights (see other post) then when we arrived at our second hotel the Pullman, Panwa Beach resort Hotel we discovered 70% was closed due to construction/renovation works. I had made STA Travel aware in June 16 that the hotel had changed from the Radison Blu to the Pullman and asked whetehr any works would be carried out and if this would effect us? The young girl who I will not name, emailed me back and advised me 'No, no works that i am aware of '. So when you get to a hotel thinking brilliant, we can finally relax you cant because there is banging, welding, this went on from around 7am to late at night all over the hotel. Its a horrid sound whilst tucking into your eggs and bacon hearing drilling/welding and banging going on. Its also not nice to discover the bar has been closed, one of the main pools was closed, three out of four restaurants were closed and whilst you looked up at the hotel you were greeted with the wonderful sight of tar-pooling and steel beams. Not what we had paid for. STA can not help me as they said it is not their fault, their 'suppliers' have offered my self and louis £128 for our troubles thats £64 each - it is insulting. You dont pay £60 to go to Alton towers to go on two rides. Please help me, I want compensation for this mess, £64 each will not cut it when we paid £1450 EACH for a holiday that went from bad to worse - to top it off, I contracted Salmonella on the 7th day in the Pullman whilst over there, the hotel called me a taxi because of the sheer agony I was in - they charged us £40 British pounds!!!! It was a ten minute journey?!?! Also Seeing as the only eggs/fruit I ate were in the hotel and the only pool i swam in was the hotels I can only assume I contracted it from the Pullman. Please someone help me... Thank you.

Can I suggest you put it in paragraphs so it's easier to read?

I think you need to write to STA saying the proposed compensation is inadequate and asking for a higher figure. Try to keep it factual, keep emotion out of it and avoid peripheral things. Unless lots of people at the hotel came down with salmonella, and you have evidence of this, you will be hard pressed to show it was the hotel's fault.

Your salmonella (has it been confirmed as salmonella?) can only be attributed to the hotel with proof. I expect you touched various surfaces that were beyond the control of the hotel. I'd put it down to one of those things that happens when you go on holiday.

If the taxi was used to go to the hospital you'd need to get a receipt and claim it off your insurance.

You need to separate the cost of the hotel from the cost of the full holiday. How many nights were you at the Pullman, did you make any effort to move elsewhere?
  • Hello,

Sorry I am fairly new to this.

I have gone through STA but they are saying that it is not their problem. I have had to go through ABTA now to help me because all STA's suppliers are offering me is £128.

I have pushed and perused this since November 2016. Would ABTA be my only hope?

I cannot pin point the Salmonella, but the day before contracting it I didn't eat anything but a BBQ Ribs which I shared with my boyfriend and the day after I woke up late due to a hangover so didnt eat anything until the evening and thats when it kicked in - My local council called me and confirmed the Salmonella poisoning because I was so ill even when I came home, the officer told me it take 24-72 hours for salmonella to be active? I did try to discuss the complaint of the works to the hotel but the manager was always busy or in meetings? When they were free i was bed bound and that was a day before flying to Bangkok.

I contacted STA Travel on the 2nd day in the hotel (we were in the Pullman for ten days) but it took 3 days for a response and by that time there was no point in me perusing anything because with only five days left it was difficult to get a hold of the manager. I just dont know what to do.

    Thank you,

Could it have been the drink?
  • No, I did ask the Environmental Health Officer that but he advised that it is contracted by eating unsanitary foods (which i expected because I was advised to be cautious), eggs (i had an egg sandwich every morning for breakfast), pool water, chicken meat - It is mainly from poultry which it is contracted from. I thought i got it from some sausages (as it happened within an hour) but he advised me that pork doesn't carry that bacteria and that it would have been from something i ate the day before.

As he is the expert I asked for a letter to confirm i contracted it over there - it is difficult to pin point it i understand, but I had tests done back home and because it was Salmonella the government are informed.. but my main reason for the forum post is the construction works at the hotel?

    Thank you,

How can he categorically confirm that you got it from the hotel? I'm assuming, given how disappointed you were with the hotel that you went out at times?

Why did you not find alternative accommodation? It is difficult to put a value on your loss of enjoyment when you did nothing to get away from it.

How much did you ask for?
  • Yes we tried to get out every day, but when you have to fork out money for other inconveniences like delayed flights, missed ferries, missed taxi's, missed pre-paid hotels you actually don't have much money to do all you wanted... but we tried to get out as much as we could because the disruption was irritating.

The officer didn't specifically say I contracted it from there and neither did I - however The day before I had breakfast in the hotel (egg and bacon sandwich) that whole day we rode on our mopeds to see the Big Buddah and I didn't eat again until dinner which were the pork ribs which I had shared with my boyfriend. The next day i didn't eat again until dinner as I wasn't feeling great - then it kicked in. I assumed it was from the hotel because in the 24-48 hours of my symptoms the only place I swam was the hotel, the only thing I drank was water and Chang beer, and the only thing I ate which normally carries Salmonella were the eggs. My point isn't about the poisoning, my point is the construction works of the hotel.

We could not find alternative accommodation because we had paid for ten days in this particular hotel, and there was not another hotel around Panwa Beach that was cheap enough with the money we had. I had contacted the travel agent who we booked through to see what they would advise as I had never been to that part of the world before (their king had also just died so I had to be pretty respectful and follow certain rules) but STA Travel seemed unable to help. Its not my loss of enjoyment its paying for a holiday and staying in a hotel which was 70% closed when i specifically asked four months prior 'will there be renovation works' and I was told no. Its the renovation and construction works which caused my upset, the Salmonella was the icing on top after delayed flights etc.

I asked for at least 50%(MIN) of the hotel we had paid for back. The cost for 10 nights at the Pullman Panwa Beach is £1000 for two adults in a delux room. I have advised STA travel, ABTA that I am asking for at least £500 between me and Louis at the very Minimum.

    Thank you.

I mean this nicely - it's not a good idea to sign up to a site this big using your real name, presumably year of birth, and refer to your partner by his first name. You've made yourself far too identifiable and sadly there are people out there who enjoy causing trouble.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
  • Thank you for the advice - but there are hundred of Holly's in the world - Its not my full name and the 93 is not my date of birth. I have only just signed up to this forum as Martin Lewis i great at helping and thought the site could help me figure out a way to claim not only for my flight delay but hotel being under construction... and my name is the only piece of info I have given out, my partners name is not Louis.. I am only asking for help on a holiday, but i do appreciate your concern. Thank you.
