One reason for extra packaging is that we expect out of season goods so the supermarkets are stocked with stuff that had to survive a trip halfway around the world.

Meats and the like aren't cut off a lump of dead cow while you wait it is pre-packed in plastic containers that can survive being handled by umpteen selective potential buyers before being tossed into a supermarket trolley and having other stuff plonked on top.

The world is a far different place from the days of coal fires - plus stoke home fires up with plastic containers and you'd have Bejing air quality everywhere.

We need to collect recyclables but councils should make that as easy as possible to ensure maximum participation. Requiring multiple collecting bins makes things harder and discourages recycling - imo it is a false economy and probably not an economy at all considering the EU tax on landfill.
