How often? Is there a specific time limit?
It depends on the type and use of the electrical installation. It also depends on what condition it was in at the time of the previous inspection. A label should be affixed at the origin of the installation detailing the date of the last inspection and the recommended date of the next inspection.

Every 10 years is generally the recommended period for private residence inspections.
Not correct. That is the recommended date of the FIRST periodic inspection. After that it is for the inspector to recommend the date of the next one with due regard to the condition of the installation.

You should have your electrical installation inspected and tested periodically, and a report on its condition obtained.

You should ... but nobody ever does.

The only thing I have done regularly is have the gas boiler serviced.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

    Well, they say 10 years:
    http://www.electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk/find-an-electrician/periodic-inspection-explained/
How often is a periodic inspection required?

Your electrics should be inspected and tested every:
•10 years for an owner-occupied home.

    and these say 10 years:
    http://www.testitelectrical.co.uk/newsite/faqs/periodic-inspection-and-testing/
    A. It is recommended that periodic inspection and testing is carried out at least every:
    • 10 years for a domestic installation

And guess what this company states:
    http://www.fixedtesting.com/testing-intervals/
    Domestic accommodation - general -
    change of occupancy/10 years

    Or how about these:
    http://www.commercial-electrical-testing.co.uk/electrical-installation-testing/periodic-inspection
    •10 years for domestic properties.

    So who should I believe?
An anonymous person on a website whose sole purpose on here seems to be to get people to spend as much money as possible on electricians or verifiable statements from multiple different companies?

Instead of reading opinions you should read the IET Wiring Regulations, and Guidance Note 3 (Inspection and Testing). Guidance Note 3 (an IET publication) suggests 10 years as the recommended maximum period before a new owner-occupied house is first subjected to periodic inspection and testing. (The actual period will be determined by the designer of the installation.) It is clearly stated that future inspection and testing intervals are to be determined by the inspector having regard to various factors including deterioration and evidence of ongoing maintenance etc.

So you are, purely and simply, WRONG.

So I shouldn't read opinions but you then post an IET suggestion. Not a rule or definite term, simply what they suggest.

As I've already shown, lots of companies who carry out this type of work suggest that every 10 years is fine for an inspection.
You are, purely and simply, someone whose only reason for being on this forum seems to be to attempt to get people to employ an electrician when in many cases those people can quite safely and legally do the required work themselves.
Not exactly money saving is it, but then again, being an electrician yourself, you are not exactly unbiased are you?

I think the key word in Risteard's post is Guidance.

No. The key point is that it is necessarily at the discretion of the Inspector. The term cannot possibly be fixed as different installations will be in differing conditions e.g. due to wear and tear, overloading, not being fit for purpose and general deterioration. If you can't understand that then frankly you mustn't be a sentient being. The requirement for Periodic Inspection and Testing derives from the IET Wiring Regulations.
