Hi chums I had a text from my eldest DGS Danny this afternoon saying he will be coming for a mid-morning 'brunch' next Sunday His trip to the U.S. to live with his new wife has been brought forward to the 22nd February:eek: so I want to make the most of him while he is still here.I asked him what he would like to eat and he said poached eggs on spinach with hollandaise sauce. not a problem I thought, and as I was going to the recycling place I nipped into Tescos to see if they sold spinach.
After searching all the veg counters I asked a service assistant and she said they had not had any fresh spinach since before Christmas and I managed to find a bag of frozen stuff and wondered if anyone on here had used it.
I'm not normally keen on frozen veg from a supermarket so wondered if I should keep trying to find some fresh stuff Unfortunately we no longer have a greengrocers near to where I live so any thoughts on the fresh -v-frozen stuff ??

I use frozen all the time. Just remember to squeeze the excess water out after defrosting as it holds a lot of water.'I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore'0 -
I've stopped buying the fresh stuff as I find the frozen stuff just as good and much more economical. It does need to be very well drained though or else it can go be a bit soggy. I've always got a bag in the freezer and it is one of my "must haves" in the frozen veg department.0

Obviously, if you were intending to eat it as part of a salad (it tends to my 'base' leaf as it seems to last forever!), then you would need fresh.
However, for the purpose of eggs florentine (and any other cooked dish, for that matter), frozen is absolutely perfect.
Just be aware that you need to drain it really, reaaallly well0 -
Thanks chums yes its for eggs florentine, is it best to microwave it then drain or in a saucepan do you think I normally steam most of my vegetables0

Frozen will be fine. I'd defrost the night before in the fridge then squeeze it out a bit before use. Just check that it's whole leaf and not chopped. I imagine chopped won't be a disaster but whole leaf will work much better for that kind of dish (whereas chopped is great in a curry!)0

ours Sainsb*** had spinach this week- is it worth checking another shop?
I don't buy fresh as we don't tend to use it all before it turns to mush but keep bag of frozen chopped in and add a couple of lumps to risotto etc0 -
I'd say stick to fresh for Eggs Florentine - especially as this has also been a special request and you want it to be perfect.
If the frozen turns out soggy or your son was expecting fresh then you'll be disappointed.
I think this is the one time when you'll kick yourself if you cut corners.:hello:0 -
I would try to get fresh if you can. I'd only use fresh for something where you want the spinach just wilted. I use frozen for things like curry where it's going to be boiled to death anyway!0
