I think this is the key flaw in allowing a machine to remember passwords (I'm not talking about LastPass etc., because they are still accessible)

Sooner or later you will probably need to know some of those passwords.

I'd be resetting any I'd forgotten while I still had access to the accounts, and replacing with a password I knew (or which LastPass etc. knew).

The fly in the ointment with that is when you change your password you have to enter your current password and the new one before you can change it.

The simple alternative is to go down the forgotten password route and then change it.

My passwords for the sites site I regularly visit are saved on my laptop.

I have a new laptop I wish to open the sites on it and I can not remember the passwords.

Is there a way I can view the passwords saved on the old laptop or do I have to reset them again/

Using HP laptop windows 10 firefox

Start by going to Lastpass.com and creating an account, it is free unless you wish you use it on a mobile device where it costs $1 a month.

Now install Lastpass onto your old laptop, use the login credentials for Lastpass Account that you just created.

It will detect that you have passwords saved in various browsers and offer to import them then delete them from the browser which is not at all secure (there are pop up ads that can take you to sites that will suck them out of there).

Lastpass will encrypt them into a local vault and also online in their vault.

Now go to your new machine, install Lastpass there too, it will offer to take any passwords you have on your new machine too if you have created any.

Now here are some things Lastpass can do for you.

    Remember passwords
    Generate unique complex passwords
Enter the passwords for you so you do not need to remember them.
Go a step further and actually login for you
Create multiple profiles for you so that when you register for a website it will fill in all the fields.
    Change your passwords regularly
Tell you how long since you changed your password for a site
Offer you a security check on all the passwords stored
Store secure notes (anything you like)
Store credit card info with the profile (I do not use this)
Force a reprompt for Lastpass password for some sites you choose (e.g. Paypal)
Allow you to search your vault (it finds anything from username to website name)
    Two Factor Authentication
    Authenticated devices
Dedicated secure forum for community support
    Free support as well

I have used it for over 10 years, it holds about 3500 logins for me

It DOES add to the memory a browser uses but it is worth it. You can tweak the preferences so that it works the way you want it to.
Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !
