Agreed if it is accidental damage but reading the OP's posts and descriptions of the problem they don't appear to think that it has been caused by any misuse or accidents.
I don't think they can prove it either way, which kind of the point.

It wasn't accidental damage. It just appeared/was noticed when I changed the valance. This is done infrequently because like I said, I have a topper on top of it which I wrap the main sheets around. So there was 2 layers between the topper and the actual mattress.

The mattress was chosen after many exhausting trips going around. I have to have a firm but supportive mattress for my back condition. This one which is pocket sprung was the only one that fitted the bill comfort wise without paying silly money. Long-term Pension Credit unfortunately does not leave much left over, even when saving up for years. If it had meant paying double for a mattress I would have done, even if meant going into debt. But this one equalled others double the price. Apart from this tear of course :-O. I realise and know that choosing the right mattress is fraught with all sorts of problems. What is good in the showroom or web description isn't always in practice.

I don't see what else I can do really, as like some of you have raised: how can I prove it? If only I hadn't had the valance and topper on, I may have noticed it sooner within the guarantee period; but I didn't. All I can hope for is that it doesn't get any worse. The mattress itself so far has been great, just that one issue.

Thank you all for your help.

How big are the tears? Is it sewable? Using a strong upholstery type thread.

I will have another look in the morning. it is possible but I feel the upholstery thread may be thicker than the ticking and possibly create more of a problem. Unless of course there are different thicknesses of threads. I seem to recall a curved needle and a string-type thread in my father's tool box way back. But maybe things have changed.

I will report back. Thank you for your suggestion.

Is the tear along a seam? If not it would be most unusual for it to just tear with no outside force causing it.

Maybe it is worth paying a bit more for a better quality mattress, we bought a Hypnos mattress last year that comes with a ten year makers warranty.

She paid £400, that's not cheap.

I would be very surprised too if my mattress should tears .

It's not the cheapest, but at that price point it's a long way from being a premium one. You get what you pay for. Mine cost more than 4 times that price and still the same as the day it was purchased 12 1/2 years ago.

No fosterdog. I will post a photo if it is on my iPad; otherwise I will have to wait for my phone to come back from o2 as it is faulty. It is more or less where my body would be lying; in the upper middle part of 'my side'.

I am normally the one giving out advice but now I am on the other end of the stick :rotfl:

To put it in a nutshell: I bought a good heavyweight mattress from Dunhelm Mill. I also bought one of their memory foam mattress toppers (the better quality one). Myself and my husband have disabilities so apart from the statutory turning round and over at the appropriate times it has not been messed about with or abused in any way. We have had a mattress cover and valance over the mattress itself; then the topper with another mattress cover then the sheets etc on that. We are both of average weight. When I came to change the valance on the mattress I saw there was 2 tears/splits in the ticking on the mattress. I have never had a mattress where this has happened, not even when setting out at 19 with a cheap one. I took photos and phoned the company up. The gist of it was, because it was out of the 12 month warranty by 7 months, they would not do anything, nor send a technician round or even accept me emailing the photographs.

Surely a mattress should not start to split like this after such a short period of time? Going by DMs attitude it means we are expected to just throw £400 away after a short period of time on the scale of things (it is suggested a change of mattress every 8 years for the average person/couple).

Is there anything I can do? I know with white goods and electrical goods, even after the warranty has run out, the consumer does have rights as certain products are expected to last longer than 12 months. If all fails and there is nothing, any suggesting on how to stop it getting worse? I would post a photo but it is on the phone which is in the repair shop!

Did you pay for the mattress with a credit card? If so you can complain to your credit card provider about the problems with the mattress as they would be equally liable for any inherent problems. However they would be within their rights to ask you to obtain, at your cost, an independent report to confirm the fault was inherent. However they should at least have a more helpful attitude. And if you don't believe they are treating you fairly then you can complain to them, and ultimately the independent Financial Ombudsman Service.

Gosh!! I can't imagine paying over £1000 for a bed far less a mattress.
