Octavia 1.4 TSI high mileage
Am in the market for one of these and I can just about stretch to a 2013 model which gets me the new shape and upgraded 138bhp engine, but with 50,000 miles on the clock. I know the diesels are capable of really high mileages, but don't hear so much about the petrols. Anyone with experience of this engine with high mileages?
I assume its better to go for a newer model with higher mileage than an older model with lower mileage?
Thanks! Hope that makes sense...

138bhp from a 1.4 engine just doesn't sound right to me ... it suggests it's being pushed to the limits, so may be more prone to failure.
Just my opinion.0 -
50K isnt high miles on any car - providing its been well serviced and maintained.0

that is my instinct and it has full history and of course the assumption that 50k miles in 3 years is mostly motorway driving anyway so its probably in better condition than a car 2 years older but with 30k miles0 -

I'd definitely go for the newer car with the higher miles, particularly as its the newer model.0 -
Lots of problems over the years with these engines so you need to know which version it is.
VAG are on about their 4th redesign in an attempt to build one which doesn't have inherent design issues.0 -
I've just bought a 2012 Giulietta with 56K on the clock.
I'd initially ruled it out because of the mileage but as it was the colour, engine and spec I wanted, which I was struggling to source elsewhere, I decided to view and test drive it, and had no hesitation in buying it. Apart from a lot of stone chips on the front bumper (which the dealer sorted out for me) the car looked and drove as good as new, which I assume is likely down to the miles being clocked up on long and/or motorway runs.
Interestingly, mine has a 1.4 engine and puts out no less than 170 bhp.0 -

I have seen some references to this, but am unclear which version it refers to. This is what concerns me as I view this as a car I will keep for a long time (although my mileage is low)0 -
You'd better ring Skoda and let them know - the newest one is now 150BHP from the 1.4
And there's a 160PS (157.8 BHP) version.
http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/technology/petrol/tsi
"On the TSI 1.4 160PS the engine-driven supercharger operates at lower revs, with the turbocharger - powered by the exhaust gases - joining in as engine speed rises. The supercharger is powered via a belt drive directly from the crankshaft. This provides maximum pulling power on demand, even at very low engine speeds. TSI engines are designed to deliver maximum torque from engine speeds as low as 1500 or 1750 rpm. And that has the twin benefit of not only increasing your driving pleasure but also cutting fuel consumption."
And Ford do a 140 BHP version of their 1.0 Ecoboost engine, I'm not sure what DoaM would make of that!0 -
If you try to get more from less, the tolerances must be tight (so the margin for error reduced).
Perhaps these engines are fine ... it's just something that I'd factor into my considerations. That's all I was meaning.
I'm sure I'm not the only one to think this, but perhaps I'm the only one to have "voiced" it so far (in this thread).0
