Bank recommendation for best customer service?

  • Bradford & Bingley have always given me great customer service on savings.
  • Another vote for First Direct! Banked with them for 10 years and they have been excellent.

I switchewd to the Woolwich a few years back when I took out a Mortgage with them and have now ended up with Barclays following the closure of the Woolwich Current accounts. Barclays customer service is terrible, nothing but problems since the switch from Woolwich. They could not even get our names right on Cheque books!

I am Just waiting for a good tracker mortgage deal to come up so that I can switch back to FD.

  • Been with FD for 13 years. While I have some other gripes about them, customer service is not one of them. Always been absolutelty first rate. 11 out of 10 on that one. The branch thing is a non issue - in 13 years never found it to be a problem. Consider HSBC as FDs high street presence. But the times you actually need to use is minimal anyway.

Funny thing is, I came here this morning to see what other banks people would recommend for current account. FD have just announced they are not going to pay interest on current accounts which I'm not happy about. That's the thing with FD - over the years I've put my savings elsewhere, my credit cards elsewhere etc.
  • If you keep large balances in your current account, then perhaps not.

I only keep minimal amounts in my current account; the bulk is in a higher rate savings account to be transferred as and when required.

Still, I find that their customer service makes up for any shortcomings one might encounter.
  • I'm pretty good at 'sweeping' out to savings accounts, but my income can be lumpy (monthly but base + comission), and so are my outgoings (e.g. direct debit on my business expenses credit card), so I like to keep a reasonable float and don't want to spend too much time micro managing my current account. Don't care about high interest on CA, but 2% or so would be nice.

But difficult to drag myself away after 13 years of very good servce...
  • While on the subject of bank customer service. This may amuse. Brother moved house recently. Letter from bank: "Thank you for notifying us of your new address. If there is anyway we can help at this time etc. etc...."

Guess which address they sent it to? :-)
