We moved last year, paid about £350. (the company was recommended to us)

The guy doing the job owned the company and he had a young lad working with him. The owner never stopped smiling all day and made our move very easy.

The estate agents who made over £2K from us without even advertising the property as they had somebody lined up made moving day hell by basically lying about the wherabouts of the keys as in they didn;t have them. They miracuously appeared 2 minutes after our solicitor getting involved !!!

This meant a good 4 hour delay, yet the removal men were still working for us till 9 at night (and still smiling) so I think a £20 tip was well in order.

Needless to say that next time we move I will use both the removals and solictor again but the estage agents I will use to compare estimates but they wont be getting our business !!

just reading everyones replies here and talking from an ex removal guys point of view, the wages are crap, the hours are long and the removal men are often away from home for days on end moving you. Saying that if the service is useless, complain and dont tip, however if they are polite and helpful and have moved all your worldy goods safetly whats the harm in giving them a tenner for a pint in the pub that night. I moved someone once from stoke to st andrews golf course, an ex bt director so not short of a bob or two, it took us five days in all to pack his stuff, move up and unpack it for him.he did give us a tip two pound each !!

My brother worked as a removals man for a couple of years, it was a pretty nasty job for pretty miserable wages, and getting a tip always made his day. I'd say £5-10 each depending on how good they are (although I agree you shouldn't tip for poor service).

TBH, I would also make a point of tipping them individually or making sure they're all aware, my brother was ripped off by a colleague once who just pocketed a tip meant for four people.

Tipping is becoming a menace, you should only tip for exceptional service. What really annoys me is when you go to a restaurant and there is a small fineprint on the menu which states that a service charge is automatically added. The exception to this is in the usa where some jobs eg waitress only work for tips and recieve either no or a very small wage.
