I am moving house next Friday and was wondering if there was a standard amount for tipping removal men or is it up to myself....don't want to offend them!

I couldn't say if there was a definite way of calculating it.
When we moved, we had a team of three (although one left half way though the day) who were so supportive and helpful (on what was a very stressful day for me) and I gave them £20.
I thought that this was okay at the time - I couldn't say whether they were disappointed or not, but in the large scheme of things in terms of the cost of the move, it was nothing (everyone seems to want a piece of your money don't they!).
I suppose it depends on how much stuff you have! I had loads - and I still can't work out if I was stingy, or generous!"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
Are you not paying them then?0

I have to send a cheque to the removal company they won't see any of it.
Like mrcow, I was thinking along the lines of £20 as there will be 2 guys, I guess it depends on how helpful they are on the day.0 -
This could start a WHOOOOOOOLE new thread of it's own!!!
Why oh why do we need to tip some professions & not others???
I'm wary about who or why I tip - saying that my dad used to be a chaufeur & relied on them for a way to make his wages more sensible.
Thought we were all supposed to be paid enough these days!!
Answer to the Q - removal men wouldn't be on my list, sorry to any of you on here!!

You wouldn't for example tip your dentist for a rather splendid root canal job but I thought it was generally accepted that certain people are always tipped if the service is up to scratch such as waiting staff in restaurants and other service industry staff, most of who are very badly paid anyway. In New York last year *everybody* expects a tip for the slightest thing, thankfully we are not as bad as that here......yet!
re my original question, I don't think removal companies pay thier staff that much and having done a few moves over the years myself I know how grueling a job it is, looking forward to watching some other mugs doing it for a change0 -
No, pay them nought unless they do something exceptional for you,as it was said
before do you get tips for doing your job,in my last job all I got was abuse, usually
from removal
men!!!!!!!:T Hail Hail :T0 -

Why should you tip them when they are doing the job for which they are getting paid! You should expect the removal men, as representatives of the company for which they work, to do the job for which you are paying.
I would only consider tiping someone, who's providing me with a service for which I am paying an agreed amount, ONLY IF they provide a level of service condsiderably better than the norm.
It's not your obligation to make up for any possible low rate of basic pay!
One of the problems in this country is that too many people want, or probably expect, to be paid extra for doing no more than is expected.
Phew!!!! thats cleared my chest.EJS0 -
When we had our last move, it was a bit of a nightmare and they worked really hard. We didn't have much cash on us so just gave them about £10-15 between the two of them 'to buy themselves a couple of beers'. They seemed quite happy with this. As an alternative you could buy some beers to give them at the end.Annabeth Charlotte arrived on 7th February 2008, 2.5 weeks early0

Not quite removal men but.....
last year we phoned the council and requested removal of about 5 items. We had to pay £10 and list the items we wanted removing (ie cooker, fridge, 2 old carpets, 1 box) . We had the items around the side of the house but we also had a pile of old carpets and bags of wallpaper strippings, junk, lino etc.
The council guys took the lot away, even the little bits on the path. We gave them a tenner for 10 minutes work ....because it saved us from doing it and we really appreciated it.
We had our garden done and the gardeners were punctual, polite, hard working and tidy. We bought them a crate of beer (along with many bacon butties and cups of tea) and they were chuffed to bits.
If your removal men work hard and give you a service above what you would expect then tip them.....if they don't, don't. Cups of tea and a pasty/pie from the local shop are always appreciated.Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
I would say tip on what you can afford if the service is good. I would pop the money into an envelope and hand it to them when they leave, saying something along the lines of get yourselves a drink with this.
I can understand some peoples attitudude regarding not tipping, but some times if the service is really good, it does no real harm. after all moving peoples possesions for them is really hard work. We moved ourselves last year, and I said never again. It took 6 of us all day and was completly knackering.
I suggest that if people are bothered about not getting tips in their line of work, get a job where yu do get tips:p0
