How hard is it take a door off its hinges?

And put it back up again afterwards?

We need a new american fridge freezer (to replace our existing one, which is slowly dying :( )
We are looking at a hisense, as they get good reviews & come with a 5 year warranty, and it's about £400 less than the samsung equivalent replacement.
Our Samsung had to have the doors removed to get it in, but I'm not sure the hisense can have them removed (the guy in the shop didn't seem too keen to be doing it either)
It might well fit in with just the handles removed, but if not we might need to take the kitchen door off. It's a standard wooden half glazed exterior door. The hinges are inside the bit that closes (if that makes sense) Is it just a case of undoing the screws and then putting them back in afterwards? Can you do it by yourself? Would nice delivery men do it for me? It's a local euronics store-every time we have bought from them they have been brilliant.

Thanks! :)

Yep, support the door and take out the screws. Reverse to refit.
Possible alone but easier with help.

DIY numpty here - still managed to take a door off and replace it. A second pair of hands is very helpful, otherwise it's not difficult.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Unscrew the hinges from the door, remove door, replace door. Easy peasy.

Put something to pack up from the floor to the underside of the door it will stop it dropping when you undo the screws also when you replace the door the hinges will be at the right level.

As they said above - it's easy ... in theory.

In theory you support the door with a few wedges under it - undo all the screws most of the way, take the weight/strain and rush to undo them all and lift it off.

Repeat in reverse to put it back.

One strong/tall person could do it alone. One midget or a weak person'd fail and it'd end in tears.
  • Hi,

handy if someone can support the door when taking out the final screws and positioning door for refit.

If wanting the delivery men to do it, you could do as much as you can yourself before delivery.

If screws have been painted or varnished over then screw heads will be clogged, so will need to be cleaned, use a sharp pointed implement.

You could remove screws and only leave the top one holding, though loose, on each hinge.

Though if delivery men not in a hurry a coffee and a wee biscuit could get the job done.
  • Agree with all thats been said here but would add a few points: make sure that you clean out all the paint from the screw heads( as said before) and use a decent screwdriver, either pozi or flat. Locate the screwdriver in the head of screw and TIGHTEN the screw slightly, either by hand or by using a hammer/mallet. Then unscrew gently. A litte preparation will save you hours of grief should you strip the head off the screw.

I agree it is easy, but I have always removed the hinges from the frame, not the door! Probably no good reason either way, but when putting it back, I find that it is easier to adjust the door until the hinge lines up on the frame and gradually tighten all the screws in, rather than doing it the other way.

If the OP is leaving the hinges in place in the door frame, it might be worth taping them flat to avoid them catching (and scratching) the new fridge (or the guys carrying it!).

I suggest removing the hinges from the door frame rather than the door.

That makes refitting slightly easier and also avoids the sod's law risk that the new fridge will catch on the hinges and get scratched or dented.
