If he holds one of these, what happens when they couldn't contact the holder? Surely there is a process for sending in the document?
To quote from the link I posted earlier on the DMO website
"The gilt registrar, Computershare Investor Services PLC, has attempted to contact all registered stockholders regarding the redemption of the undated stocks. However, there remains a number of unclaimed payments and if you believe that you may have held an undated stock and have not received the redemption proceeds you should contact Computershare for further information about how to claim any payments due."
Obviously we haven't seen said loan/bond so don't know if it's a British Government one or not - but if it is DMO is the right place to be
If it's not a British Government bond it would help to know exactly what the paperwork says it is0 -
That will just be a typo. It wouldn't say "first world war loan" because at the time they didn't know there was going to be another one.
Funnily enough, if QI is to be believed, WW1 was indeed known as the "first world war" long before WW2 - as early as 1918

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

It could do. The First World War doesn't mean there was a second,it just means it's the first war classified as being worldwide. The "first man to beat a 4 minute mile" doesn't mean there was a second. </pedant >0 -
Wasn't it 'the war to end all wars'?0

Incidentally, it wasn't the first war to have global scope; that was the Seven Years' War, which was the European powers fighting over five continents, much like the 1914-18 war.Eco Miser

That is how it was sold to the American public. Unfortunately, like so many advertising slogans, that didn't last.

I've always thought that the seven years war is one of the key points that has defined the modern period. It confirmed British military superiority outside Europe over the French and why English is the main international language in use nowadays. Also British naval power was confirmed, and policy about neutrality of Britain in European power struggles, subsequently defined by backing whichever European power was weakest to maintain a balance, whether that be France Germany or Russia.0 -

wikipedia is a blog and a politically motivated one at that.
It is not the sum of all knowledge as it portrays itself to be and many seem to think is.'We don't need to be smarter than the rest; we need to be more disciplined than the rest.' - WB0 -

Perhaps you don't like some of things that get published on Wikipedia, but I don't think anyone could call it a "blog". The generally accepted definition of that (at least according to Wikipedia) is a chronologically ordered series of entries, while a Wiki entry can be edited in any order, and generally edits/comments are not presented in time order.
Some of the people that edit Wiki entries may be politically motivated, but many are not. Some are commercially/financially motivated, but a huge proportion appear to be just geeks with an interest in the subject that the wiki addresses.0
