Every supplier is required to state on its website that there is a possibility that foundation stage smart meters (SMETS1) will lose their communications capability on a switch of supplier. The next generation of smart meters (SMETS2) should start rolling out later this year: these will connect to a third-party - not the supplier - and will allow supplier switching without a loss of communication. All the suppliers were tasked late last year to come up with proposals to upgrade SMETS1 meters to SMETS2 compliance. This may require nothing more than a change of communications hub.

Spot on Hengus. Our warning is at the top of the online booking page when customers register an interest in having a smart meter.

We've specialist teams who book smart meter installations and it's part of their job to let customers know they may lose some smart capability if they change supplier. They also need to let customers know this if they're moving to a property where one of our Smart Meters is already in place.

Hope this is of interest Hengus.

Last year I moved from Eon to Places for People Energy. My Eon smart meter continues to work, in so much that I can still take the meter readings off the smart meter indoor unit. I then have to enter them online for Places for People Energy. I keep my indoor unit right next to my PC, so entering the readings is a less than 2 minute job.

So not ideal, but it could be worse (at least I don't have to go outside to read my electricity meter or struggle to read the gas meter, which is at the back of a storage room).

Looks like you've the Ecometer display The Hawk. As I posted above in reply to picks, the Ecometer shows meter readings but another version we've used in the past, the Chameleon, doesn't. If you're ever struggling with the display, there are guidelines and instructions on our website at the link fredandwilma posted earlier in the thread. Thanks fredandwilma.

    Flintstones here :D

If you've had your smart meters a number of years, do you have the Ecometer display?

It is possible to take an up to date reading, (updated every 30 mins.)

Keep pressing the second button down on the right of the display (with the 1) until rate now - pence /kwh is displayed.

Underneath it will say present reading total and a longer number.

That's your present reading. Repeat for both gas and electric.

See page 9 of the guide:

    Hi picks,

I've read the instructions and your display doesn't appear to have the facility to take meter readings.

    https://www.eonenergy.com/~/media/PDFs/For-your-home/saving-energy/Chameleon%20SED%20guide.pdf

However, you can change your Smart Meter Preferences in your online account, to daily data collection or half hourly collection, which should update your meter readings? I have monthly meter readings selected, so at the very least, you can check your last meter reading. Check when your next meter reading is due?

Go into My Account - Change your details, and scroll down to the bottom to Change Smart Meter preference.

To find meter readings, click on Meter Readings on the main menu.

Sorry picks, I thought you were looking for a final reading, to switch.

Without going in to the pro's and con's / politics of the smart meter system, it's just something you will have to take into consideration when switching suppliers, unfortunately.

It's not so bad, here in Bedrock. :D

As consumers, we pay for everything, including the collapse of suppliers such as GB Energy.

Thanks for posting these links fredandwilma. Very useful.

Shame about the prize draw. :naughty:

With regard to the new website.

I guess I'll have to get used to it.

    Indifference?

Have a good weekend yourself. :)

Ps - At least you're going to have a quieter life on here, once everyone has switched away from E.on. :D

I'll still come and have some banter, though. :rotfl:

If you haven't already seen, I've posted a bit of stuff on other threads about the 10 winners of the £1500 prizes in our Spin the Wheel competition. We've put them on our social media channels and our website (on the 'nice little extras' page).

Sorry you didn't win fredandwilma and hope you're finding our new website layout okay.

I thought you'd gone part time or retired?

Or maybe part of E.on's streamlining?

    That bribe obviously wasn't enough.

Packet of crisps next time, too?

Plain, salt & vinegar, cheese & onion................

I know, prawn cocktail are your favourite? :rotfl:

    Hi picks

Thanks for opening up this thread.

Just thought I'd highlight a couple of useful links of where this is covered on the site.

    - Cheap Energy Club FAQs - we explain what'll likely happen if you've a smart meter under 'Do smart meters affect swithching'
    https://clubs.moneysavingexpert.com/cheapenergyclub/faq
    - Cheap Energy Club Application Page - before you switch you'll be asked if you have a smart meter with a note to let you know about the potential loss of functionality.

Also our energy analyst MSE Andrew recently published a blog on this subject that you may find interesting.
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/team-blog/2016/12/22/smart-meter-stopped-working-its-probably-because-you-switched/

I hope you find this information helpful. Do let me know if you think there's somewhere else it should be covered.

    Thanks

Thanks for the links which I found interesting.

OVO show their meters are compatible with E.ON, First Utility and Utilita https://www.ovoenergy.com/ovo-answers/topics/all-about-switching/the-switching-process/will-my-smart-products-still-work-if-i-switch-provider.html

Is their a link which shows compatibility of smart meters for all the others?

What kind of nonsense is this where it seems every energy supplier has a different system and strategy for smart metering in a totally chaotic system of incompatible technology? Why doesn't Cheap Energy Club make any reference to the fact that switching customers possibly have to revert back to the Flintstones era?

The funny thing is that I don't know anyone that could actually lay their hands on the information bit of their smart meters. I know that I had one somewhere but I couldn't tell you where it is now. The meter just sent its readings, never needed the other bit.

Now I have moved away from EON I have had to figure out which tiny button to press on the display to read the meter. Which is fun as 20 different numbers flash across the screen with no reference as to which one is the damned meter reading.

It would have been nice if they designed the meters to easily show the reading.

Not sure if I ever find the hand held bit it will help or not. Does that show the meter reading?

Depends what type of display we fitted indesisiv. Earlier Chameleon displays didn't show readings but later ones, including the Ecometer type, did. If you find your display, have a chat with one of our specialist smart meter advisors (contact details are on our website). Tell them what type of display you have and they'll let you know if it shows readings and how to see them.

Don't worry you've left us. As we fitted the meter and display, we'll still be able to give you some basic advice. We won't, though, be able to into more detail as we'll have lost control of the meter.

There's also information about the different displays we've used on our website at the links fredandwilma posted earlier in the thread

Hope this helps indesisiv and have a good weekend.
