Holiday illness

  • If you do get tests and it is salmonella you would then have to prove that it came from the food at the hotel as theoretically she could have picked it up from anywhere. It's a tough one as booking it yourself and not through a tour operator you have nobody to fight against apart from the hotel who will deny it.
I'd give it a try though.
See what the docs says and go from there.

  • So did the hotel call the doctor? Hmm and he didn't diagnose food poisoning, but she needed an injection and three separate medications?

Sounds like she needs to visit her GP if she is still ill anyway and he will want to know what medications were, especially the injection.
I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!

Not necessarily. Depending on the bacteria involved it can take up to 72 hours for symptoms to show.
    This is true.

We were in Ho Chi Min City last April and I started having stomach pains. 24 hours later my missus developed them but hers were much more severe. And then she developed projectile vomiting. Once she had vomited she was fine.
I though just had the stomach pain and nausea for another 3 days.

We had both eaten the same food.
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.

Thank you all for your comments and advice, my daughter is much better now and we fear there isn't any point in pursuing it as we have no proof that it came from the hotel, we didn't eat outside but it's our word against theirs, just a shame the holiday was spoilt

Agree - probably more hassle than it is worth - and nobody intended for it to happen.

Did you manage to submit a successful travel insurance medical expenses claim - I cannot imagine the doctor's visit plus injection and multiple medications came in under the excess?

It came to £102 all together, our excess is £100 so no point x
  • Agreed.

That is fair value - often medical costs in Spain have become "inflated" outside of the EHIC covered public health network. Sometimes tour operator and hotels alike have been accused of "taking a cut" as well, bringing in a particular doctor known to them. Doesn't sound like they did here and of course not all do.

Shame it affected your holiday - I bet you will all avoid salmon abroad now!

Yes totally put off Salmon, ironically it's my daughters favorite but think it will be awhile before she eats it again x
