RAC told me I was ok to drive AND forged my signature on the call out job sheet!

  • Yes 8i6daddy I meant to carry the passengers and I was stating the facts regarding the situation Strider and was by no means intentionally trying to use emotive language. My point was that I had first of all been left longer than I was initially told, to then chase up the recovery and be told that the job hadn't been dispatched, to then have a vehicle sent that was the wrong size for us,and given the fact the RAC chap told me the car would be OK to drive....I was left with the 'choice' to either drive or wait a further 3 hours with a baby. Following what happened I called Customer services for a receipt/job sheet to be sent a document I'd never seen with my name printed on it and an attempt at a signature that should have been mine.
  • Sounds to me like the RAC Mechanic forgot to get you to sign the document in what must have been quite a stressful situation for everyone due to the screaming baby. I think you would have signed that document given the situation you were in at the time and exactly the same thing would have happened. Also The Mechanic would have warned you about the type of repair, you even state ''Temp repair'' in your OP.
Also I can almost guarantee that you're Head Gasket was cooked already if you were driving it around in the red until the car ''conked out'', you already knew there was a temporary repair done to your radiator, I would have been looking at the temperature gauge like a hawk.
Basically I feel sorry for the RAC Mechanic, he's forgotten to get you to sign a document, done something he shouldn't have by forging it. However he did his best at the time in a difficult situation in the hope of getting a family with a young baby home ASAP, and now he's probably about to lose his job.

The car was OK to drive as loong as you keep an eye on the temperature, i would have been watching it like a hawk and had the interior heater on full to help take the heat away just in case.

As soon as it started to creep up, i would have stopped not let it boil over again.

He wont be trained to know everything about every car made. He will have a general knowledge. The car was driven away and made how many miles before you cooked it again?
They wont carry all the test equipment to check for blown cylinder head gaskets or warped heads or cracked heads or blocks etc etc.. He would have taken it to a garage for that.

You said you could not wait any longer to be towed so the onward journey appears to be your choice. Although you said you could have got someone to pick you up or bring food for the baby. or you could have taken a taxi?

Definitely 2 sides to the story here.

It's not unreasonable for them to carry the equipment to do a sniff test.
  • The guy looked at the car said the was a pinprick hole in radiator tube, so did a temp repair filled it up with water

did the temp repair fail on the way home , or was/is your car a right off , due to the rad failing and you causing damage before calling them out

    question again

did the temp repair fail on the way home ,
  • If I knew the car was no way drivable I obviously would have had to get somebody to drive the journey to bring a feed but as I was told the car was ok I drove the car. Regardless of what equipment would have been carried a patrolman should be able to spot a blown head gasket.

All this aside, regardless of what was wrong with the car before or after assistance, I had my signature forged on a disclaimer
  • yes , had my signature forged on a disclaimer , but stop going on about them righting your car off!

if the temp repair held and you had it repaired the next day would the car be running now or was it already damaged before you rung them
  • Twhitehousecat as far as I know the temp repair was not the issue. There was a cracking on the radiator cap that was not spotted. I don't know if the gasket had gone before or after the assistance but it should have been noticed surely?
  • pinprick hole in radiator tube

make yer mind up time ? , if the mechanic had have sealed the pinprick hole in radiator tube , and the rad cap was leaking it would show when the car was re started.

who has "written the car off" and what was the reason for this

Except a sniff test will only show up if its mixing with exhaust gas, the gasket could be leaking on the outer edge. So a sniff test may not have shown anything.
