Hope you feel better after your nap SL. Not surprising about the FF being smaller - it's like cars too, all more padding. But not helpful at all. The man you spoke to sounded very good though.

As I was prepping my apples yesterday for crumble @trix-a-belle, I was thinking that I should be using the peels and cores... next time!
I know! I only used the peels and cores of the last lot of the 3 batches I prepped and froze before everything came together. This is it if you want to have a go https://dontwastethecrumbs.com/diy-homemade-apple-cider-vinegar-using-peels-and-cores/ i'll let you know how I get on.
I'm not a prolific ACV user but maybe I will become one and substitute with it where I can if I can make my own from that little.

Any other uses for parts of fruit/veg/other usually discarded welcome

I hope your nap restores you SL

This is very interesting - if I had the energy for backup work like this, I could do that - there's an orchard at the end of the local nature reserve, and the council encourage people to use them.

Oh thanks for that Trix-a-belle! Not prolific user here either, but as you say, maybe I'll find more uses for it if I have a ready supply.

Karma, you mean the apples go to waste as it is? That's awful! Apples are the one thing I haven't got a reliable supply of - although I do pop into the orchard in Dad's village sometimes, but I feel I can only take a few there as I don't live there any more.

Same for me TMV, I just got lucky this year but cant guarantee it again. I did however put some pips aside in the hope of growing my own & planting it in my parents garden where there is space, I might do the same with a hazel tree for nuts although that will require sharing with the squirrels   If I can get some to grow i'll plant out into our community wood too.

It wasn't hard Karma I just peeled into the jar instead of the compost bin (ikea kilner jar for the win) I don't do excess effort/energy expenditure either. I didn't have a coffee filter or kitchen towel for the top which was the hardest thing to get & I don't have a warm spot so its in the cupboard next to the dishwasher but at least there I can check it when I get something from there as otherwise I will forget it, its had ~10 seconds attention since being done
I rounded rather than going all US so 500ml water & 2tbsp sugar (I never follow recipes to the absolute letter)

Sort of ... I'm sure they increase biodiversity.  Wasps, rabbits, and I believe deer still make it to that little reserve, though that might be before the new houses got built on the other side.  I think the local school (which has the farming section that includes the pigs, sheep and cows that I go see every now and then) also work on the trees.  Not sure if they do anything now, but in summers when I've been well, I've seen little groups down there, halfway up the trees.

That's good to know!  My house is still in utter chaos after holiday prep/ holiday/ covid/ winter prep, so no chance of doing it right now - I'm not even unpacked :( - but I *swear* I'll be ready for these sorts of opportunities next year.

Awww, @Suffolk_lass, I have hot water bottle envy! Who knew there was such a thing?! I've been hanging my nose over that animal print covered hot water bottle for a while. Am torn because it seems such a lot of money when I can buy a hwb for around £4, but the cover is so lovely, looks like really good quality & I'd have to buy some suitable fabric to make one. I would purchase it from my Personal Spends, so it would be budget-neutral.....(sighs).....
And the only rules regarding our Personal Spends are
    1. We can spend it on absolutely whatever we want.
    2. When it's gone, it's gone.
I can see me caving in before the month is out.

My problem with hwb with covers is that they are never hot enough.  Thus speaks the person who has been known to blister their back trying to get rid of back ache so perhaps not the best person to speak to on this!!!  Managed to only have one tiny blister so far this year so I'm counting that a win.

Is it wrong to tell you (@foxgloves) this was my second HWB with animal print cover? The first is about five years old. The cover washes (ten minutes in the TD fluffs it back up) and the bottle is a standard size so can be replaced. I wanted to keep one downstairs for keeping by feet and legs warm and the other is for the bedroom. If we are not intending keeping the aga on all winter the house will not be so warm so the bed needs to be warmer.

I do use almost boiling water in them @badmemory so very warm. Too much for my cold feet to stay on the HWB all the time, so I keep moving it and my feet until they are warm and then it moves to the small of my back or slid off the bed, onto the floor. DH meanwhile, normally sleeps on the bed with no cover until about 04.30 when he tucks his feet in under the duvet; that is all year round.

We have discussed the FF and I think we will go and look at other options (JL in one direction, the local euronics store (who we bought from) in the other. If they can get it, they will and as already demonstrated, have excellent customer care. The biggest problem is the hinge set up means it sits three inches (8+cm) proud of the adjacent door frame making that narrower to use. So it is not staying. We need to look in person though. Today's job!

Oh yes, I meant to say, apple cores are dog-bound here but the peelings were what got DH's Sourdough starter boosted when he began. I don't use enough ACV to make some but I do add apple bits to jellies as the high levels of pectin help it to set.
