Port Out Termination fee

Hello, my wife and I have had our mobile phone contract with Orange (and then EE) since mobile phones began. We have renewed our contracts over the years simply to upgrade the phones however during a shopping trip just prior to xmas last year we seen a better deal with O2 so we changed provider knowing that we were finished with the current EE contract.
I should have known better but I was unaware of 30 days notice when out of contract and I'd never heard of Port Out Termination fee. I'm not going to challenge EE for the £30.88 (£15.44 each) they're charging because I should have known however my view is this is nothing short of fees by stealth and the regulator should be right onto it. I changed provider for my broadband last year and there was absolute zero fees.
Look out for this folks when changing your mobile provider.

There are hundreds of similar threads on here. I've never had a mobile contract that's didn't have a 30 day notice period for ending it.
The problem is that a lot of people seem to think their contract ends after the 12, 18 or 24 months that they signed up for. However, the contracts don't end - the months you sign up for is merely a minimum term.0 -
You pay your line rental in advance, so check to make sure you haven't paid for the period already. The 'fee' they charge is basically the same as the line rental, you should not pay both.0

It wasn't a porting specific charge as you'd have been billed the same for disconnecting on the same day.
You could have seen out the notice period (you agreed to) by specifying your port date for the end of the notice period. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Not really. They could transfer out to the new network near the ned of the 30 days since the PAC was issued, but you can't tell the network giving it when to use it. It's not them that uses it and if unused the contract continues.0

I did it recently: I got a PAC and when I gave it to my new network, I specified the port in date. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Every network requires 30 days notice in their terms, you'll find o2 will charge you similarly when you leave them.====0 -

I never said anything about the old network...
You give the PAC (to the new network) and agree a port date. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
