If I recall correctly it used to be the case that there was little you could do if the wrong account number is valid and the credit did not bounce back then then there was little you could do to force the receiver to return the money. However it's now an offence to retain a wrongful credit (Section 24A of the Theft Act 1968) and the banks should assist with its return (MSE Article).
Banks WILL assist - but if the money has been spent then the bank will not take the hit as it was not their mistake.0 -

I guess fortunately I did notice the issue on the same day, so hopefully not I guess0 -

I guess the only thing I could do then is to phone the police, and get a crime report0
