Gave employer the wrong account details - unpaid for this month

People make mistakes. Last month I moved my entire salary to the wrong account. I was lucky and it ended up being an old account of mine and I got it back fairly easily.
I assume you have read this article? http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/send-money-wrong-account
The person it was paid to can't really claim it is theirs, but there is always a chance they will spend it.0 -
Caveat: I'm not recommending this site but it worked on my account and told me the account with the number following mine is
not valid
https://www.sortcodes.co.uk/
This should at least tell you whether the 'incorrect account' exists or not. If it doesn't, your salary should bounce back to your employer. If it is a valid account your employer will have to persue through their bank, on your behalf.
Good luck and remember to double/triple check in future.
EDIT - your post re the account existing wasn't there when I posted.
Thanks though. The bank also confirm that it exists. Not sure if they were meant to tell me that it's a woman's account as he said "without putting her on the phone" ...Though I guess that does only narrow it down to about half of all their customers...0 -

Yeah that isn't so great either, but a bit fortunate in your case tbf
I read that article, but whilst articles are nice for general advice, they're not as good for specific circumstances (ie: that article is more geared at you sending money over, vs say your employer doing so because you screwed up)
I guess it was picked up on the same day too, albeit at 4pm...0 -
The only real check (which i guess that sortcode website does in the background) is a Modulus check.
May not always work with banks that only use a few centralised sort codes. These tend to recycle valid ones more quickly too, which means a typo is more likely to be in use. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Yeah. This is a centralised sort code I know because I signed up for this account online, and not in my local branch0 -
From April, Barclays will just take the money from the account, with or without the account holders permission. If they have spent some or all of it, and gone into overdraft, they'll slap charges on too.I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.0

Thanks. It'd be perhaps better if I got the sort code wrong, as it MAY potentially have gone to Barclays..however I know it's gone to Santander0 -

If I recall correctly it used to be the case that there was little you could do if the wrong account number is valid and the credit did not bounce back then then there was little you could do to force the receiver to return the money. However it's now an offence to retain a wrongful credit (Section 24A of the Theft Act 1968) and the banks should assist with its return (MSE Article).0
