flight cancellation - airline being awkward - am i right

i was to fly to germany to make a connection last november and was advised 24hrs before the flight that it was cancelled. it was a text and there was no mention of why
i found out there was a pilots strike but when i rang the airline i simply could not get through. the lines were jammed all day.
i had a connection to make and was getting no help so had to make a decision and booked a one way flight to make my connection. this was a great cost.
when i got back i contacted the airline and showed them the extra costs i incurred and now they are saying as it was a strike they are not oblidged to give me anything other than £21 for the EU flight.
i have complained but are they correct or do i have a case.
the airline is lufthansa and the strike was the 25th November
from what i understand the stirke was the 24th November but then suddenly was extended by a day. this must have been organised on the 24th.
never done this before so any advice is appreciated. i originally put this in the wrong forum section and some have posted the airline is correct but others say maybe not so a definitve answer is appreciated.
thanks

i have read the arictles but they do not go into detail of "extraordinary circumstances".
as i was not contacted by the airline to find me a solution then i would have thougt i am entitled to compensation especially as i spent ove £1000 to make it to the connecting airport0 -
Put your flight details into EUClaim and bottonline to see whether they believe there is a case for EU261 for the flight.
You should speak to your travel insurance re the additional flight expenses0 -
If the strike was confined to Lufthansa then you are probably due compensation under reg 261/2004.
However, as had been said many many times before, please, in future make any posts to the Lufthansa thread, not your own which clutters up an already busy forum board. If you're new. read The FAQ and Vauban's Guide

You are not entitled to compensation. If you have a case it will be under the duty of care portion of EU261 which states that passengers must be offered the option of rerouting when their flight is cancelled. Whether LH met this obligation is hard to say in your case. There's always a risk of something like this happening when you self-connect on separate tickets (I'm assuming this is what you were doing).0
