It was from a non bmw dealer with full service history.

The car has hardly been run since the fault was first noticed. Except for the purpose of identifying the noise.

I think you will struggle to get any sort of goodwill from the garage. As others have said, 10 years old. Even purchased at that age from a dealer likely would result in nothing. It is not a fault that anyone could have anticipated.

Just a small update. As I assumed no real luck. The dealer has offered to try and source the part with discount for me which is good of them but I doubt they will have much luck.
