Car hire deposit question

Hi. Please could someone help me with this. If I buy the maximum insurance from the car hire firm (In Italy), do I still have to leave a large deposit on a credit card? I know this is not the best way but I don't have the necessary funds on my credit card. Thanks for any help

If the insurance you pay for with the hire firm has no excess, they will need no large deposit or pre-authorisation on your card, but they will hold its details in case of incidental charges for fuel, traffic fines, etc.

Some firms don't block a large deposit anyway, such as AVIS. Enquire firstly.

2nd that. Avis in Portugal didn't take a big deposit on my card. I had separate excess cover. They just blocked 60 euros deposit for petrol.

This has always been a selling point for the companies in Spain. Use your own insurance and they'll want a big deposit, take out theirs and there's no deposit or any worry about getting the car checked later as they essentially cover all damage.
