Subletting and cat broke lamp

I'm subletting a flat for a few months. Paid in cash and no deposit. It was a mess when I moved in and the owner hadn't cleared his own stuff out of the way. He also has a rabbit, which I had agreed to look after, but the rabbit area was a filthy mess.

A friend of mine is going through a messy break up and I'm looking after her cat for a week while she's away. Today, for no reason, the cat went mental, raced around the living room, and broke a large lamp. It looks like a handmade wooden lamp from another country (the owner travels a lot). Pretty sure it's both expensive, and difficult to find one the same. So what do I do?

Ask the cat owner to find/pay for a new one?
Get a new one myself? (If I can't find the exact same one, find one similar.)
Nothing?

Another point is that the owner has a cleaner come every fortnight to clean the house and the rabbit's area. Just as he was leaving for the airport, he said we would "split the price" of this. I've never had a cleaner and don't want one. Besides, the rabbit needs cleaning every few days otherwise it's a filthy mess. So I'm going to call the cleaner and tell her not to come. As a result, he'll actually be saving money by having me there.

I'm subletting a flat for a few months. - you're renting a flat, your ll is subletting. Paid in cash and no deposit. Ask the cat owner to find/pay for a new one? - Unlikely to be successful, you are the responsible 'owner' in this case. You can ask, but legally speaking you have very little backing
Get a new one myself? (If I can't find the exact same one, find one similar.) - Well if you can, you should. But it sounds unlikely.
    Nothing? - probably.

You should contact your landlord, tell him what's happened and ask what he would like you to do about it

I don't think there's anything you can do except tell the owner that the lamp got broken and ask how they would like to deal with it.

    Ha, crossposted with above!
  • Well, the second point is that over the months, there's a significant amount of money that the owner WON'T be spending, as I'll be cleaning his rabbit myself. Therefore could be a bargaining point if he's funny about the lamp. I just feel bad as it was a lovely lamp. Bloody cat. Calm as anything now.

Are you being paid for this? (ie a professional house sitter) or are you a tenant?

You probably aren't saving money as the cleaner / cleaning company will have a contract which needs to be paid regardless of if you cancel or not
  • No, I am paying rent.

By the way, I live in Turkey, there's no such thing as contracts for cleaners here. It's cash in hand.

I assume you had an agrrement with your Landlord when you moved in with regard to the cleaner and each paying half? You had the option then to not agree to this. Your landlord may be happy with the current arrangement and not want to change it

  • Am I not allowed to post here? I'm British and like this site.

Like I wrote, he mentioned it while he was on his way out of the door. I don't have enough money to pay for a cleaner and am not comfortable with someone being in the flat with all my stuff. I don't have to have one.
