outward and return flights with different airlines. Any catches?

I have always used the same airline for outward and return flights rather than splitting it. Is there any disadvantage in flying out with one and back with another? I have a flight to book for September to Italy and the timing of the return is better with BA. The slight disadvantage is that BA only allows me to print my boarding pass 1 day before departure and I won't have a printer then. Not sure if I can just use the phone app from Bologna or print it at the airport.

You can just print at the airport. Only downside I can think of is that if something happens to your outbound flight (delay or cancellations) and you decide to get a refund, you will be stuck with an inbound flight you can't use.0

That;'s true re. refund for return flight. Think I will stick to the same airline.0

Price up BA flights with hotel or car included. It can often be cheaper and gets ATOL protection.
You can check in online and collect paper boarding pass at the airport.0 -

That would happen with most low cost carriers anyway0 -
Usually a good suggestion thanks but, in this case, I am doing an Italian language course. The school provides a room with a local family and i don't drive.0

You don't have to actually stay at the hotel to my knowledge. You can always double check on https://www.flyertalk.com & go to the BA forum0 -

That's not true. I can't think of one that wouldn't offer a refund of both outbound and inbound flight if just one is cancelled.0 -
That is what I had always thought as well but have never put it to the test.0

I did browse Easyjet's hotel offers briefly but think I would have had to pay for the hotel as well as the flights. Anyway I have now booked my return flight with EJ this evening.0
