  • No my storage heaters are only on when i turn them on by hand their the modern ones that are plugged in to the socket .

They have nothing to do with economy 7 .

    Rubidium,

I have checked my consumer unit and i'm afraid there is no digital time switch.

But there is a normal switch that is label E7 HEATER SWITCH separate to immersion heater switch and it was switched ON all the time.

It gives power to switch by the immersion heater lower one for the off peak , because when i've switched it off the off peak switch by the heater was not responding.

It would help if you posted some pictures of your consumer unit, meter and associated wiring.

If you only have one consumer unit then everything should work on Off Peak rate during Off Peak hours, so it depends how your Peak/Off Peak is switched e.g. multi-rate meter with built in timeswich or with a separate associated timeswitch?

Your plug in heaters are not storage heaters and your incorrect terminology is causing some confusion!

Plug in heaters are unlikely to be storage heaters - they might be oil filled like Rointe or even Fischer heaters (filled with magic dust) but they aren't storage heaters.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • I would love to post some pictures but because I'm new in the forum I don't have the privilege to upload pictures or links . Unless there is a way around this ? Do let me know .

Once again sorry for my terminology ill do my best to improve.
  • Sorry they are not storage heaters . They're electric radiators .( the economy radiator company )

Is it a brand new flat or perhaps an older flat that has been renovated? It sounds like the builder/developer has been too tight to fit timer switches and has instead fitted manual switches.

I can not see how your hot water tank can be costing you so much. Only having a couple of showers and heat loss from the cylinder even at daytime rate should not be costing anymore than a couple of pounds a day.
  • Hey coffeehound,

It's an older flat that has been renovated. But my landlord was living here before me and she did the renovation . I was on the phone with her the other day and she said she never had these kind of extremely high bills like i do.

So would it it be a good idea to buy some kind of timed switch and replace the off peak switch next to the water tank ?

    Who is your supplier?

    What tariff are you on?

As a new customer if you have not changed tariff, you will default to their most expensive variable rate and you should be able to get a much cheaper deal if you use comparison sites - don't forget cashback for switching.

As your not using E7 for heating, then unless you make full use of E7 to heat up a tank full of hot water during Off Peak hours then you would be better switching to a single rate tariff because the other 17 hours will be more expensive. Some suppliers will require a meter change and others will simply add the day and night registers together for billing.

You can get an immersion heater timer for less that £20 e.g. here

The timer should be fitted to enable the lower immersion heater during E7 hours (the stat will turn it off when the tank is hot) and the top boost only used when absolutely necessary, as it will use peak rate. A modern well insulated tank will not lose much heat over a 24 hour period.

To post pictures as a newbie, simply remove the http:// and post the latter part of the url of the hosting site e.g. i58.tinypic.com/20tm1w5.jpg or add some spaces to break up the url so it is not recognised as a link by the forum.
