My car was 12 years old when the gearbox failed, RAC came out no problem and i'm on the lowest package.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

haven't ever had an issue with RAC and older cars.
probably because they are on very shaky ground accepting a policy for an older car and having it in the terms that it's not covered0 -

The Car was 9.5 years old when the agent signed her up at a service station without telling her the cover would be invalid for 1/2 the membership period.
Just wondering if anyone has had any success in reclaiming their payments back in a situation where they paid for cover they could not claim on?
That is almost £150 a year!. So i assume she must be paying for a driver policy which covers her in any car no matter the age. If she is paying that just for one car then she is severely overpaying!0 -
The information about the age limit for cars came from details on a comparison site that compared the various aspects of different breakdown services. I've now been through the booklet she was given at the time and cannot find a mention of an age limit.
Yes it is personal cover and very expensive! I guess the agent who signed her up made the most commission on that policy. As the family only has one car, she does not drive other peoples and here husband would not have been covered when driving the family car its totally unsuitable.
I have found this exclusion on page 14, Section J of the booklet.
"Vehicles not serviced in line with the manufactures recommendations or serviced in the last 12 months by a Vat registered garage"
Anyone else got this clause? So if you service your car yourself or the mobile mechanic is not vat registered or you don't do many miles a year so it only goes for a service ever 2 you are not covered if it breaks down. I can understand must have an MOT and be roadworthy as ive seen in other policies but not demanding its a Vat registered garage.
What do you all think?0 -

I think that clause is to do with parts cover i.e. where they pay a garage to fix your car. Th breakdown cover does not have such exclusions AFAIK.0 -
Mine just says this in the bit that deals with European cover:Your eligible vehicle must be roadworthy
and in good mechanical condition at least 7
days before any booked journey within your
period of cover. You must also make sure it
is serviced as the manufacturer
recommends0 -
I can't find that section online but assume it's section H here:
http://www.rac.co.uk/pdfs/breakdown/310314-drive-uk-breakdown-terms-and-conditions
The clause seems to be for an optional garage repair service, not the main recovery service which has the following exclusions:Not Covered
1. The cost of any parts;
2. The fitting of parts, including batteries, supplied
by anyone other than us;
3. Any breakdown resulting from a fault that we have
previously attended and:
a. the original fault has not been properly
repaired; or
b. you have not followed our advice after a
temporary repair;
4. Recovery for caravans or trailers if your caravan
or trailer breaks down.
