RAC Car Age Limit

Have just discovered that my daughter is happily paying £12.29 direct debit to RAC every month for breakdown cover that she cannot call on because her car is 12 years old.
The Car was 9.5 years old when the agent signed her up at a service station without telling her the cover would be invalid for 1/2 the membership period.
Just wondering if anyone has had any success in reclaiming their payments back in a situation where they paid for cover they could not claim on?

  • Don't know, but on the face of it sounds like a case of misleading or even mis-selling to me.

Wondering what the age limit is I looked here http://www.rac.co.uk/breakdown-cover/breakdown-help/vehicle-eligibility I can't find it. I expect its in there somewhere but its not obvious.

    Q. What vehicle eligibility criteria do you have?
Please see the answer to 'What types of vehicles are not covered'.
Where's the question 'What types of vehicles are not covered' ?

I was having a look as well but can't find it, the site says to checked the General Exclusions section on their terms and conditions which I can't find either although in the part they explain what they don't cover I can't see an age limit there either. Some other sites claim the RAC won't cover past ten years and some claim they don't cover cars that on their lowest cover and you need a higher one.

One of the cars on my policy is a 2008 so it will be approaching the ten year limit so I would like to know whether it's going to be covered or not when I'm renewing this year.

Depends on which cover she has. The cheaper cover has an age limit but the more comprehensive options have no age limit.

Is it car only cover or driver only cover?

I have RAC personal cover. My cars are 18 and 25 years old respectively. As far as I am aware, any car I drive is covered.

I took out European cover for a trip to France in the 18-yr-old, and they were happy to cover that (I checked).

It depends if you have personal cover (covers any car) or the car only cover which is the one I believe is age limited.

About 3 years ago I had a car that had just gone past 10 years of age. I had taken out RAC breakdown cover the year previously and it was approaching renewal.

I was sent a renewal quote as usual. I called the RAC to query the 10 year cover rule and was told that the rule does not apply to renewals, although I could not find anything in any literature or website which confirmed that.

Personally, I took the view that if they offered a renewal quote knowing the age of the car and I accepted the quote, they would have a very difficult time subsequently trying to argue the contract was invalid on the basis of vehicle age.

When did that come into force? I had no problem calling them out when my 25 year old Capris oil cooler O-ring sprang a leak. I've likewise called them out when I was in my dads 1960s Morris Minor. My wife used it a few years ago on her 1995 Mitsubishi FTO when a hose blew.
  • I have feeling they've silently done away with age limits. It's not difficult to pop up a warning saying you cannot get vehicle based cover as your car is over x years. I'm sure AA do/did this.

    Where did you discover this?

I've been an RAC member for years. I've just looked through the current Ts and Cs and can't find any age limit.
