    I just wanted a comparison.

Yes, but there aren't any 10 yr old EVs to compare to.
What do you get range wise?

From my experience of 2 cars, I'd say count on 3 miles per kWh in winter, and 4 in summer - Stageshoot above has a light foot with 5mpkWh!

So with that in mind, multiply the mpkWh by the kWh of the car - for my Zoe, 22kWh, it would do around 90 miles in the summer, and the Soul EV, at 30kWh, is doing 110 ish. But I know that I'm driving less economically in the Soul, because I've more to play with.
What range are we looking at then? 100 miles?

FOR WHAT CAR?!! THEY'RE ALL DIFFERENT!

Hiya, if you mean the right sort of balance between range and cost, I asked a similar question a while back on here to learn from the EV'ers.

Here it is, and you can check back for the replies:

    A question for EV'ers.

I've been watching a you tube channel called Tesla Time News, it's a father and son combo, and between them/family they have a Leaf, Tesla X and a Model 3.

They raised an interesting point that range of around 200-250 miles is fine, and that they think companies aiming for 400 miles, 500 miles etc are missing the point, as 200 miles and cheaper (smaller battery) is a better option for most, especially with fast chargers. I get the impression that once you adapt to an EV, you now longer 'need' to compete with petrol/diesel tank ranges.

Sounds like a good point, but what do I know!
Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

You've all made good points. My calculations are that the furthest ground is about 50 miles away and of course we play in the winter half of the year. A second hand early model Leaf would be ideal for a commuter, but ironically not for someone such as myself in a one car household who does a lot less miles but with a different pattern.
The clubs and council pitches we play at don't have destination charging, so although charging en route after the game would be possible it would be a right faff if I were carrying passengers.
I'm only outlining my own thinking as it is a microcosm of the barriers to adoption at the moment which must be replicated over many people. The rapid change in the market means such barriers are coming down, but at the moment they are still considerable.

BP buys UK's largest car charging firm Chargemaster
  • It all depends on how you use your car and whether you intend to buy new or not.
I hate spending money on cars. I had to replace my 12 year old Fabia, and an 8 year old Fiesta i had inherited from my son last winter. I got a 6 week old Nissan Leaf on a 3 year PCP deal. The price was 19K. I am on a PCP deal. Both those cars were part of my deposit.

I love it. It's got plenty of torque if I need to shift out of the way of something. It's faster than either the Fabia or the Fiesta. I live in the Cotswolds. It climbs hills like they are not there. The driving experience is amazing. You glide along. Very relaxing. My partner and I both love driving it. I prefer playing the "see how much charge I can get home with" game. I don't have to crawl to get the best out of it either.

The new ones have a very decent range (250 mpcharge max), but not if you drive everywhere at 80. Mine has a 150 mile range and right now in summer, that is what I am getting driving sensibly. I commute 60 miles a day to Bristol and back and it's great for that. In winter that drops to around 115 - 120. It's still double what I need daily.

We use a lot more electricity now though but it's still a lot cheaper than petrol, diesel or the LPG I used to use. Economy 7 now makes sense for us.

I am using a PCP which worked out cheaper than running either of my cars. At the end of the three years I will probably upgrade to a newer one with more range. Holiday miles are usually in our camper van. The car came with two weeks free car hire a year from Nissan so if I need something that will go further.for longer, I can take Nissan up on that offer. Or there's my partners car.

Anyone who says they will never drive an electric car has probably never driven one is all I can say. Go to Nissan and test drive one for a few days. That's what I did.

You do have a while before they start actively phasing out petrol and diesel cars though but you are right as it will affect the second hand car market.

I worked out that the range of mine would mean that it will have plenty of people interested in it second hand. It all depends on your driving profile. At the end of my three year term I have to think about buying the car or doing another PCP on another one. Had bought another second hand car - or even a new one, after three years it value would be drastically reduced or virtually nothing anyway.

Go test drive one and see what you think then.

Thanks for that. We sound similar in our attitude to cars. I had to get rid of a 12 year old Fabia but only because of moving countries and the re-registering costs. I think you are reinforcing my point about it being suitable for commuters as 19K is still 15K more than I've ever spent on a car! As I'm now early retired it's even more difficult to justify, even to myself.:o It'll be interesting to see the depreciation on these PCP cars and how many people think it worth their while retaining the vehicle.

As a single vehicle household the even bigger issue of getting to the Alps for my 2/3 weeks seems to have been sorted by getting my GF hooked on skiing, and her new car based van being ideal for chucking in the skis and bootbags, and getting even more wine and cheese in on the way back!

We bought a second hand Leaf (6 months old) for £15k, which is about £10k (and 3 years newer) than any previous car. Leaving aside the fact that it's lovely to drive, after 3.5 years it has saved us money from lower fuel costs (and also because maintenance has been very cheap) compared with the 4 yo small petrol car we would otherwise have bought. So if you have the cash, or can borrow it cheaply, it is pretty much a no-brainer. One of the the newer cars with a longer range, even more so.
  • In this heat with the air on full blast I bet the range is massively reduced?

Doesn't make a huge amount of difference - a few miles, maybe.

Silverwhistle have you tried searching for charging points near the furthest away grounds? I bet there's something in the same town; a train station or supermarket or something. It might mean parking a bit further away though
