Mobile contracts with or without handset makes no difference to bankruptcy or default or CCJ's records. Wasting money in getting overpriced (1) and paying for the pleasure of contract- "finance" (2) absolute nonsense!

    .

You make a lot of assumptions with no evidence. I have none of those.

Thank you for the info in the first part of your second paragraph.

I've heard it said somewhere (maybe here) that with a weak credit history there is more chance of getting a monthly SIM-only contract than a longer contract with handset, because there is less debt risk to the network. Also this is supposedly a way of establishing a better credit history, if you succeed in setting up the rolling monthly plan with the likes of O2.

Perhaps others can confirm if there's any truth in this or not - I am also interested because my daughter needs to establish some credit history, and this might help.
Today my daughter, at my suggestion to try it, applied for the Virgin Mobile 30-day rolling SIM-only contract, £6 with 300mins/unlimited/600Gb. The online chat agents seemed to think that the best chance of acceptance would be with the cheapest deal, but I'm not sure whether they really know. Some time elapsed after I pressed one of them, so they may have consulted a manager before replying.

The application proceeded through to the end, including credit check, direct debit and card verification entry, so we'll see if the SIM pack or a confirmation email actually arrives in a few days. It will be the first credit product she has had, if successful. If so, and the OP really wants a longer contract with or without handset, it might indicate that starting off with the cheapest possible deal is probably the best way, then to 'upgrade' later.
    Evolution, not revolution

Have managed to find a deal that suits me and have been successful in being accepted. Many thanks for all your help and advice although you may think I didn't listen to it!

A little scary as I view credit as "debt" and this will be the first time in quite a few year I will "owe" anyone money.

    That's a good approach to take :)
