Kennel Club Names

How do they work? I know my dog's kennel club name, but just wondered how it was chosen? Is one bit from the mum, one from the dad, and one individual to my dog?

I don't think there is a set way they are chosen, some breeders will have a theme running, some like you said a mix of the parents names, some the new owners choose others the original breeder chooses.0

It's just what the breeder chooses. When our cat was named the breeder had all that litter of kittens named after some hedges. The first part of their name was her trading name the second part was some Scottish hedging. Another litter was named after birds, another just colours, always with the trading name first.0

Our first dog had the name already assigned - we had a choice of 2 dogs but didn't know which it would be till we got there. We just chose her pet name for everyday. Our second had the kennel name then a strong nod to the sire's name (he was a UK Champion) followed by our choice of 3rd name. His pet name is a short version of the more formal 3rd word.

The breeder may have registered a prefix which is given to all her breeding and nobody else can use that name. That name will come first f all pups bred by that breeder. if dog has been bought in the prefix will be at the end of the name designated by 'of' or 'at' or some such word. The dog bough in may, of course, have a prefix from the breeder.
e.g Tweedledee Jason if home bred or Boysown Jason at Tweedledee if bought in.
People know that any dog with that prefix was bred by that breeder.
Not all breeders use a prefix as there is an annual fee to pay to retain it.
What follows the prefix is up to the breeder. Some choose the names, others will ask future owners for their choice. Often the names will follow a theme or are alphabetical to indicate what litter they are from e.g A litter where all the names will start with A , B litter where all the names start with B.
Only the breeder can register the pups and the whole litter must be registered at the same time.0
