How to obtain classroom experience over summer holidays?

  • Would your son consider regular volunteering with children? I'm thinking along the lines of Scouts. This type of volunteering shows long term commitment as well as some experience with children. I'm a guider (currently Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, but at the time, only Brownies), and gained a place in university as a mature student because of my long term commitment to Guiding.

Also I don't know if you have a junior parkrun near you? They're on Sunday mornings and rely on volunteers. Google it and see if there's one he can help it, it's not for a long period each week, but again would show commitment over a period of time.

If he's able to stay in Scotland with someone, they go back earlier (in August) so that could be an option to check.
  • Current trainee teacher here but spent years as a TA before training. He's unlikely to get classroom experience during the summer holidays.

All work with kids will go down well, especially over a longer term period of time as people have said. However, when it comes to applying for teacher training, they also look at how recent classroom experience is so if he can volunteer an afternoon a week during university and maybe even work as a teaching assistant for a year, that would really help him too.

Another thing worth considering is a summer job at children's summer camps like Camp Beaumont or Barracudas.
