My son , who is in year 11, wants to become a teacher, and was thinking of there is any way he can get classroom work experience over the summer holidays?

Can you advice?

Im unsure as to whether there are legal issues such as CRB checks etc but he could approach local primary schools to see if they are running summer schools/clubs where he could volunteer?

If he's in Year 11 he'll be finishing school before the end of June, most state schools in England don't finish until the end of the 3rd week in July so he might be able to arrange some work experience with a local school before they break up for the summer.
He'll need to sort it soon though, our work experience slots get booked up months in advance and our places for July are already filled.

Ditto what Jackie said, Try contacting some of your local schools soon to see about the possibility of some classroom experience in July once he's finished his exams. I've had a few in my classroom over the last few years and it will be a good way to see if he likes the job and something to add to the CV which is always a plus! Other ideas may be to seek out summer clubs/activity centres etc that may run summer schemes.

  • A lot of of libraries have reading schemes over the summer and need volunteers to talk to kids about books

It's not quite the same as classroom experience, but there will be holiday playschemes, holiday clubs, sports clubs etc running over the summer and some would bite his hand off, especially as he's a chap. He needs to start exploring this now and finding out how they recruit, because even as a volunteer under 18 they would probably want to do a DBS check.

Also, I believe they have work experience in Y12/13.

But yes, definitely July. The official leaving date the last Friday in June, so this year will be 30th, that will give a good 2-3 weeks free, but he will be in competition with the y10's for a place, so he needs to get the ball rolling now. Also, he might still have to go through the same processs as the Y10's, check with the school.

Does he want primary or secondary? Secondary aren't so sought after by the Y10's so he might have more luck there.

WHen i was applying for PGCE, all experience working with volunteers and children was considered, not just classroom experience.

Also: Y11 is very young to make this decision and this is pretty much the only opportunity your son will have in year when there is no work or future exams definitely on the horizon to study for so a break would be recommended. I wouldn't recommend any one go into teaching these days without some life and other work experience first. It nearly broke me. And many others too
