Advice needed on moving to sim only from contract

My contract ran out last October with EE. I was paying around £25 p/m for 1 GB data, 1,000 minutes, unlimited texts on iPhone 5C.
I've been into the CWarehouse shop and I'm just not happy with the deals. I only use about 20 mins calls p/m, lots of texts and quite a bit of data for google and social media, no video streaming, except occasional youtube.
My phone is starting to say memory full since last iOs thing, I've had to remove some apps but could still remove loads of pics and music.
Financially I'd be better off keeping the phone and getting a PAYG sim but I don't know how to do this or who to use. Also do I need to do anything to get it unlocked? I've heard GiffGaff are good?
Thanks in advance for any advice

Sim only and PAYG are two different things, sim only is still a contract, just a lot cheaper because no handset is bundled.
PAYG is exactly that, and all the networks offer it, if your o2 coverage is good and you aren't too fussed about high data speeds then yes, giffgaff is a reasonable PAYG choice.====0 -
I would recommend you go with virgin or plusnet.
They both use the EE network, so shouldn't be any differences with reception or with a phone locked to EE.
Virgin have an offer on till the end of january (double data) and some of the unused data will roll over to the next month.
Therefore for £6 you will have between 600-900Mb. (if you hurry)

whatsapp data is free too
Plusnet are doing 500Mb for £5 but their offers change alot and are just getting going.
Both are only 30 day contracts. So if you need a new phone soon, not an issue.
Alternativly, when you phone to cancel EE and ask for your PAC (to move your number over), they may offer you a good SIM only deal so have your deals infront of you0 -
30 day rolling contracts would probably suit you best...
Plusnet and iD can be had for £5 per month - minutes, texts and 1GB data
Plusnet, iD and Talkmobile for £7.50 - minutes, texts and 2GB data.
Plusnet uses EE, iD uses 3 and Talkmobile uses Vodafone.
Giffgaff are the pits and I would avoid at all costs. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I went with Life Mobile, but Plusnet took over. Life were brilliant when you called they answered the phone very quickly. Handy when you get them to disable voicemail, and whilst your telling them to do that a voicemail arrives. But obviously i just told them to turn it off so i couldnt remove it.
Had to call them back to enable it and then again to disable it.
With Vodafone that would have taken hours.. Took them over 40 minutes to answer the phone with an upgrade query.
Not had to call since Plusnet took over though. Although the price remains the same.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Thanks for all the great replies:)
I've never heard of iD. I have checked coverage in my area (very rural) on the Ofcom website and EE come out the best, which is what I thought as everyone local uses EE.
Therefore, I think PlusNet would be best judging by your recommendations.
Do I need to call EE to let them know what I'm doing and to stop them charging me?
Also, how do I know how much data I need?0 -
You either need to ask for a PAC from EE and exercise it with the new sim/network within 30 days OR give 30 days notice to EE and lose your number.0

Plusnet .. can be had for £5 per month - minutes, texts and 1GB data
Not this week! unless you are a PN broadband customer or haggle.

Virgin offer better value this week, and more reliable.
By the end of January things will change though.
If you purchased your phone from carphone warehouse, it is probably locked and therefore best to stick to plusnet or virgin on EE network0 -

Call EE, ask for your PAC number and say you are moving to a sim only contract for £5/6 with 1 Gb.
They may offer you something to stay.0 -

It's the second offer on their website - you need new glasses!
The OP should request a free unlock code from EE anyway. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
