Would YOU pay £159 for a strangers train ticket?

I'm really surprised at the lack of compassion and caring shown on here. Of course I would help someone in need if I were able to. We really are becoming such a selfish nation.
What's selfish about keeping your hard earned money for your own family?
Giving a couple of pounds to help her is one thing but giving her £160 to buy a new ticket is quite another, especially considering he was a nurse and has two small children of his own.
That's £160 less he has for his own family.0 -
Trying not to be cynical here but I wonder if he'd have been as helpful if it wasn't a young attractive girl. However fair play, that's a lot of money but I assume the majority wouldn't be able to spare that.
I can't say I've ever really seen anyone in trouble like this before. I've been asked for the rail/bus fair before but it's always been crack addicts. Never been asked by someone genuine.
I was thinking the same. Do you reckon he would do the same if it was some smelly middle aged man?
But well done to the bloke as £160 is a lot of cash :T0 -
Had I got a spare £159 (sadly I seem to have mislaid it at the present time) I would have offered to take her to the ticket machine/office and pay there for it. But there again, I'm the person that doesn't give the beggar at the cash machine money for a cup of tea - I buy one and give it to him/her.0

That's odd; I went to Guernsey in 1959 and it was one of the Channel Islands then. I know it can't have been towed away so when and how did it change?
What I meant was, he is in Guernsey rather than just the Channel Islands....people only think of Jersey, they could have been more specific as it highlights a good thing0 -
No I wouldn't have paid for the ticket, but I would have helped her contact her parents/other family members so that THEY could pay for her ticket or argue the case with Virgin with her.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

The student works at the Hilton, i'd imagine she wasn't as hard up as she thinks! Trying to word this in such a way that doens't sound like pointing fingers as she probably gets minimum wage there anyway but she should cut back on luxuries for a while and pay the guy back.0

She's probably still on min wage even though she works at the Hilton0

Travel companies should have a method in place to sort this out.
Why should other passengers be expected to bail the girl out so that the train company doesn't lose money?
Of course they should be able to re-print - it should be possible to void the lost ticket and issue a new one so that still only one passenger can travel.
They should also be able to take over-the-phone or internet payment from a friend or relative.
I've often seen a bus passenger pay someone else's 10p otherwise the passenger couldn't travel, again so the precious bus company doesn't lose out. The bus company should have a means of sorting it out - actually it has because I saw them do it, but only once in all the years I travelled.
It is hard to weed out the scroungers from the genuine and I don't think passengers should take the hit, either through increased fares or by expecting passengers to bail out the stranded.0 -
Its down to the individual staff, a few years back I bought a ticket to Edinburgh online and missed by connection and so got another, I didn't realise that the ticket was only valid on one companies trains even more so as the ticket was badly printed and had lines all over it, a unique situation really but it let me through the barriers.
Person on train told me it wasn't valid and made me pay a full price ticket and wouldn't let me use railcard, I heard from ticket office staff on a few occasions that they only do that if they believe you are faking it, as they can just issue a new ticket and charge the difference i.e if your ticket cost £10 to go one route and £12 another route they would charge you £2 rather than the whole £12.
Was another occasion where there was only 2 platforms at station and multiple delays, 2 trains going to same destination and I got on the wrong one (mine was say 9.45, and 1 hour late, and 10.45 came in 2 minutes BEFORE mine) I was told I had to buy a new ticket costing £48 when original cost me £7.40! Again was told by station staff it shouldn't of happened the ticket person must of thought I was lying.0 -

Just because she works at the Hilton doesn't mean that she isn't on NMW!0
