Just saw this in the Mirror: keen to hear forumites thoughts about the article.

"Stranger who spotted a woman outside a shop crying; stepped in and paid £159 for train ticket for student who lost her return"

If you could ....would you? OR wouldn't you?

I was mugged once in London and my return train ticket was in my purse. I went to a police station and they gave me a travel warrant to get home. I had to pay it back.

So no, I wouldn't pay for someone's train ticket although I have no idea if such an option exists today. I would have thought there was something she could do apart from appeal to strangers.

I was younger than that girl (17) and had just been through a shocking experience. The police were not nice to me. I had shopping bags with me as it was a shopping trip and they accused me of spending my fare money on clothes etc.

On the other hand I am quite a generous person (after reading the story), so if I had seen her crying I probably would have stepped in to help in some way.

I think that the girl should make a complaint to British Rail about them refusing to reprint her lost ticket and she should make an effort to pay the man back.

They won't reprint. Its because you could use the reprint and someone could use the original ticket.

I think to be fair part of the issue is that for a lot of journeys you'll pay really low prices if you book well in advance. Her initial return might have cost her 30 quid. But on the day it's a fortune.

First bus have a system where you can buy a bus ticket and download in onto your phone. I know you could lose your phone but I much prefer that to having paper tickets.

Whenever I've travelled with Virgin if there's been an e ticket option I've always taken that. So that in the event of losing a ticket you can reprint.

If it really is a "stranger" then surely this is a subject for the Arms, not the MRF board?

Unless of course there is a wider dynamic to this..?

well personally i would love to be able to afford to do random acts of kindness like that, just little things can make peoples day so i do try to do them when i can, ok i couldnt afford to pay for that girls ticket so i couldnt have helped in that respect, but do think the world would be a whole lot nicer if more people did random acts of kindness, so i applaud the person who helped

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

I rarely have 159 quid to spare. Shed have been mega bussing it if she'd met me. But yes I would try and help someone out. I think if someone is stranded and clearly in a state I'd try and help them if I could

Someone asked me for 11p towards their bus fare last week. :)

I'd love to be able to, but I've never been in a position where I could lose that much money on an impulse.

It's £159 at peak times, and about £85 otherwise. Could she really not have waited until say 7pm and saved the stranger a lot of money??

Erm perhaps because it's a general discussion and is nothing to do with marriages , relationships and families ???

Plus it will get a wider audience
