My telly does a far better job of upscaling than a 10 year old DVD player would.

This isn't as redundant a comment as it appears - Many people let their fairly old Sky boxes do the upscaling on their brand new 4k TVs, which can be a bad move.

You need to try both options.

There are some very good, older, upscaling DVD players around but not many 10yr old models that could upscale to 1080p, in fact the OPPO DV-981HD is about the only one of that time I can think of and the upscaler in that would be lot better than most in a mid-priced TV.
