    OP, for info, I went from a knackered 11 year old Rover to a fairly smart 5 year old fiesta in 2015, and my insurance went down by 40%. Go figure.

    Interesting. thank you. I will wait and see.
    I suspect the insurance will stay at an unreasonable level until I build up some no claims.
    I don't desperately need a car yet anyway, so i might just hold off until I have saved a decent amount which was the original plan anyway.
