  • An old style Ka, very low ins, tax, cost of running and repairs, hardly anyhting to go wrong on it - buy one from someone that has had it for yrs with some service history

Im looking at getting a used car as a runaround (private seller, friend of a friend)
Its an x reg corsa, 95k miles, and owner is looking for £670
    ...

That maybe a little high depending on exact model, condition, extras, etc

Whilst the seller maybe looking for £670, I'm sure he/she will be prepared to take about £500 or less, and as they are a friend of a friend, get them to fill the tank too :)

    According to Honest John:
    From a private seller,
aim to pay between £400 and £550 and expect to pay £450.

If your colleague comes across any more like that, do let me know please!

    Honest John suggests

... and that's presumably for an average mileage, which for a 10 year old car, 100k and multiple previous owners would not be unusual.

It was his Mum's car and she is no longer driving, it's not as if there wasn't a fight for the car, he was going to sell it to a dealership, just wanted rid rather than the £££s.

Lots of 02 and newer plated cars for around the same price and they'll have less rust than a X reg Corsa.

I checked a few second hand prices on Honest John, and they were all at least 50% over the top for private sales, his figures must be based on the asking prices of some optimistic advertisers at the dear end of the country.

He reckons I'd have to pay £4600 to replace both my cars, I reckon nearer £2700
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Is there any sites that are accurate, Parkers, Autotrader, etc just curious really as prices seem to be inconsistent.

I meant to add the expensive insurance ;)
You are better buying something a little larger and less appealing to get cheaper insurance.

I am long past worrying about the aesthetics of cars, (although I do wish modern cars had bumpers like my parents old beatle!)
Any recommendations for larger and less appealing types? :p

A Volvo S40 (or V40) - for your £600ish quid you should easily find a circa 2002 car with low spec and a reasonable history. Avoid the 1.6 petrol. Insurance *should* be more reasonable than the Corsa.

Older cheaper cars can cost more to insure. Insurer may think your less likely to care about it and drive it like you stole it.

Sorry, completely irrelevant, but just came into my head.:rotfl:

I've just been a bit spoiled. £100 a year for car club insurance. 8 quid an hour to drive when I want to. provided there's a car available when I want it. but i moved and there are not as many available in my area.
