Can someone please tell me the steps i take when getting a motability car?
We have chosen one and will phone to book a test drive. If i like it, what happens after that? How long is it until the car will be available to pick up?
How do i arrange the insurance/tax? Or do they do that at the dealership?

Once you go to dealership to order your car, it can take up to 12 weeks depending on what car you choose.
Your car will be taxed and insured by Motability.
Once you give your licence details to the dealership, RSA Motability arrange the insurances. The tax is sorted out online by Motability.
When you pick up your car it will be taxed.
You will then receive your insurance documents a week after you get the car.0 -
It is very straight forward really.
Say you have your test drive and you like the car. The motability representative will talk you through everything you need to know.
He will take some details from you, your name, address, proof of eligibility (that is your form from the DWP stating that you are in receipt of the enhanced mobility component),your driving license and also that of a second driver if you have one.
If you decide on a car that requires a deposit then he will talk about that with you.
He will then tell you a rough date for pick up. He will phone you a few days before.
And that is about it, really. Motability take care of tax and insurance.
I have had many cars through motability and found them to be excellent in every way. It truly is 'trouble free motoring'.0 -
Thank you both so much, i appreciate that.
My son is the one with eligibility ( he gets enhanced rate PIP) and I am his appointee. Will he have to come with me when i pick the car up, or test drive it etc?0 -
I believe he would have to go with you, yes. Also any deposit would need to be paid when you collect the car.
Agreed about the trouble free motoring. I've had my first motability car since end of November, best thing i ever done. Love my new car it's perfect in every way for me. My was quick and was ready for collection in just under 2 weeks. It does depend on what you choose though and what adaptions are needed, if any. I was quite flexabile with mine and no adaptions were needed.0 -
Thanks Poppy. Is that with the test drive and the pick up too?
He wont ever drive it, so would he need to come to the test drive?
He has picked out (with my supervision) the one that he thinks is suitable, and we have both agreed on it.0 -

He wont ever drive it, so would he need to come to the test drive? That is when you show the proof of entitlement then yes. I would always say yes.
He has picked out (with my supervision) the one that he thinks is suitable, and we have both agreed on it.that doesn't mean it will be suitable. My uncle did it like this, sat in the ar he wanted and was not comfortable.
See above in red.0 -
The one you think is suitable isn't always the right one. I had 3 test drives booked. The 1 being my first choice that i actually loved. When i test drove it, it was a totally different story. Hated everything about it, the drive, the seats everything. The one i ended up choosing was a last minute thought. Glad i test drove it. Always have a few choices in mind and test drive them. That way you know you're getting the right one. Remember we have these cars for 3 years. Have fun with those test drives0

Also with motability here (N.Ireland) not sure if it applies to mainland UK we were given pin number by post to give to dealer upon collecting new vehicle, think it was to put new car on system, make sure if you have one to bring it along...0

It would be a good idea to have your son take part in your test drives, to be sure that the car suits his needs, too.0 -
First car - we had to pay the deposit at the time of ordering.
Second car - we paid the deposit at time of collecting.
Delivery time depends on what car, what model, any outside factors - our first car actually took over 3 months due to production difficulties in Spain!
It's actually our son's Motability car, we didn't have him with us when test-driving; we did take him with us when ordering both times; but didn't have him with us when we collected the second car (he was at school, it was easier!). There may have been a little leeway though because the dealer knew us very well by that point. Our son didn't contribute to the conversation when ordering, at the age of 3 and deaf/non-verbal, he didn't have a clue what was going on.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls
