How to keep credit when porting away from PAYG?

I am currently on PAYG with Three, but would like to port my number away to a new contract (contract doesn't exist yet).

How do I do this while still retaining my existing credit with Three? I'd be happy to have a secondary PAYG SIM with Three for data use abroad, or lending to visitors etc.

This is probably a stupid question!

If it can't be done, are there good ways of spending Three PAYG credit, e.g. by buying credit somewhere else, buying apps or whatever?

1 Use up credit before porting

    2 TXT charity numbers

Don't forget you many need credit of a few txt's for porting the number

I did find this blog comment section (Three's official blog) in which someone called Alice asks, on 30 September 2015, "Hello, I have got two phones, both on PAYG Three and registered on my name. Can I somehow transfer my credits from one phone number onto another one?"

The reply from Moderator Claire is: "@Alice – Hi, the quickest way to do this is by calling our customer care team on 333 who can do this for you."

That sounds promising, but I don't ever believe anything anyone says if they work for a mobile network. I won't be able to prove it until it is too late - anyone here succeeded in this?

Too late why? You can order a free PAYG SIM from Three, register its number in your name, then call 333 and ask for your credit on your original number to be moved to the new one. If they can actually do it, and it may take more than one attempt to request it, you can then ask for your PAC. If no luck, the attempt cost nothing.

    Yes, I've done that! :)

I was thinking I wouldn't have time for all that, but I guess I will by the time I've obtained the new contract SIM and asked for the number port.

Not looking forward to calling CS multiple times though!
