Scarborough in February

Options
We need to get away for a few nights, I've booked a house for 2 in Scarborough next month.
We are middle aged, no kids with us, and will probably eat in and chil most nights.

I know it will be chilly, we live in a very windy place so that will be home from home!
Just looking for some options for the days please.
We enjoy walking, think I've read about a disused railway track walk?
Any options on the coastal paths?
Caves, fossil hunting or beach walks?
Any museums worth visiting?
We have stayed in Whitby 10 years ago and visited Robin Hoods Bay, so may spend a day there. Which other villages are nice for a walk around?

A parking permit comes with the house we booked, so the car won't move whist we are in Scarborough itself. Is the sea aquarium worth a visit? Any discount vouchers around locally?

Thank you in advance

    Hi toozie,

Peasholm Park, (although the Naval Warfare won't be open at this time of the year.) - http://www.peasholmpark.com/

Rotunda museum and Scarborough Art Gallery - http://www.scarboroughmuseumstrust.com/

    Scarborough Castle - http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/scarborough-castle/

St Marys Church and Churchyard, (Ann Bronte's Headstone.) -
    http://www.yorkshire-coast.com/st-marys-views.html

Stunning views up there and on the way to the castle.

There's a local leaflet with discount vouchers, for the Rotunda Museum, Sea Life etc.

You can walk along the coast either way from Scarborough.

Going South, (for a change,) catch a bus or a train to Filey, (Filey Brigg,) Cayton Bay, Primrose Valley, Reighton Sands and walk along the coast from there. The bus goes down the coast, (bus stop opposite the railway station,) and is a good way to see the local area.

Not to be missed, the jewel in the crown of that part of the coast, take the train to Bempton, (easier than catching the bus from Scarborough,) and visit Bempton Cliffs. A bit early for the majority of the birds, (but still birds to be seen.) Walk along the coast from the visitor centre. You can walk to Thornwick Bay, North Landing, (access to lots of caves, here,) Breil Nook, Flamborough Lighthouse, from there. Also worth taking a flask and butties as most places have limited opening hours (if at all,) at that time of the year.

Free entry to the reserve in February, and various events, (there's a visitor centre and refreshments.) It's around a mile and a half walk from Bempton rail station. Turn left out of the station, down the (hill,) (coming from Scarborough,) and head straight toward the coast. Stop when you reach the sea! :rotfl:

Fabulous area for coastal walking. Not to be missed if you are a keen walker.

If you run out of things to do, there's always the pound shops. :rotfl:

Have fun and take protective clothing / hiking boots. I'm envious. :D
Fred - Where's your get up and go?

Barney - It just got up and went.

I think it's called the Cinder Track? Where can you get on this in Scarborough?

You're right about the name - it goes all the way to Whitby.
This site seems to have a map of the Scarborough end

The Woodend gallery in Scarborough can have some interesting exhibitions
    http://www.woodendcreative.co.uk/gallery-and-exhibition-space.html

You say you stayed in Whitby a while back; the Whitby museum in Pannet Park is well worth a visit if you missed it before - crammed full of oddities
    http://www.whitbymuseum.org.uk/

there are regular (X93) buses running between Scarborough and Whitby (hourly in winter)

It starts at Sainsburys falsgrave, and continues all the way to Whitby

I live very close to cinder track and my allotment backs on to it.

Its not that cold in Scarborough in Feb compared with places in land as the sea acts as a radiator obviously its still cold but we have pretty mild winters here

Try Facebook I love Scarborough people on there only to willing to help

    Thank you all.

Savemoney how far do you reckon it is on the Cinder path from Scarborough to Whitby? Also are there any villages on the way near the path with cafes for a spot of lunch?
We have a car, but we could get the bus back, hubby isn't as keen as walking the distances I can!!

Weather doesn't bother us, as long as it's not a week of constant rain!!! We live near the sea so don't get much snow because of salt air, but very windy.

We might go to cinema whist we are there depending on what's on. We live 20 miles from nearest cinema, and have very hectic lives, so we never go.

Poosticks- will deffo go to Whitby for the day, love it there a few years ago, we didn't do the museums so will have a read about than now.

    Thanks guys x

It will be interesting to see what you think of Whitby if it's 10 years since you last visited? I avoid Whitby now, as it's become too commercialised / touristified / busy for my taste, and it's now full of award winning fish and chip shops. Whilst i appreciate it's a boost to the local economy, i still think it's a shame.

The same could be said of Bempton Cliffs, to some degree.

I'm 50/50 with the changes made there, and the new visitor centre etc. It's now become a tourist attraction too, especially with all the tv coverage in recent times. Whilst i appreciate the work of the Rspb, and what they have achieved there, it doesn't mean to say i necessarily like it. I personally think the best place to see the seabirds and the magnificence of the cliffs and that coastline, is from the sea, but that's not available in February.

    http://www.yorkshire-belle.co.uk/promoting-nature-tourism.html

They run trips in conjunction with the Rspb from April to October.

Ah, Nature Tourism. That's what it's called, nowadays. :(

I suspect it's nature tourism which keeps the beloved belle, in business these days. Wow, looks like it's the belle's 70th consecutive year anniversary, this year. Many congrats to the belle as the only remaining pleasure boat in east yorkshire.

It's 21 miles approx from Scarborough to Whitby via the cinder track. A shorter option is to travel to Robin Hood's Bay which is 15 miles. Not for the faint hearted? :D

I think it's a shame many visitors only see one side of our "traditional" seaside resorts. There's far more this part of the coast has to offer besides fish and chips and amusement arcades, (which is mostly what you see if you walk along Scarborough's seafront.) It's still like going "back in time" around there, and great for a relaxing break.

  • Scarborough castle is worth a look. Also a new water park opened last year called Alpamere, not had chance to go yet as it opened just after our visit last year but it has a spa pool and an outdoor heated infinity pool but not sure if they are open in winter or if you'd be able to brave the walk to the pool.
